The part was handed to Tom when Jon Pertwee stepped down to pursue a stage acting career. On screen the 3rd Doctor appeared in his last story "Planet of the Spiders" where after killing the great One, the leader of the spiders, he gets exposed to lethal radiation and returns to Earth where he regenerates into the 4th Doctor.

The 4th Doctor run being the longest is full of some of the greatest stories. His impossibly long scarf and his wild hair are easily recognized by most fans world wide.
