Description My newly detailed 3rd Doctors Sonic screwdriver is NOT the toy, this is actually metal. It started life as an RB Replicas 3rd Doctor FX sonic replica and then I took it to the next level. First I replaced the emitter halo with a slightly smaller one that has been powder coated in bright red. Thanks to a friend's recommendation I placed a stainless steel finishing washer in the center of the emitter bullet on the flat side to dress it up. You can't see the screw in the emitter because I have carefully capped it. The grip was then pinstriped to match the Character Options toy and the replica Pertwee sonic that is in the Doctor Who Experience exhibit. I also restriped the red band at the top of the neck of the sonic and put a 1/16th inch tape over the black spiral that was already on the yellow part to make it more crisp.

The Tardis key is a Mooncrest Models key replica of the key seen in 1974, Jon's last year as the Doctor. I placed a steel jump ring on the key to keep the pewter from getting damaged and then strung the key on a 3mm silver toned rolo chain that matched close enough to the original props chain. I didn't use a clasp on the chain, instead opting to open a link and connecting it to the other end of the chain and soldering it closed again.

Probably one of the more amusing aspects of this picture is that the way the sonic appears here was only seen in 1972 and after about five stores the yellow tape and spiral the red band and black and white tape on the grip were removed and the emitter was reworked into what it looked like during Tom Bakers era and the key here was never used until 1974 so these two props as they appear here never appeared together like this. XD I find that rather amusing really because the two most iconic versions of these props that Jon is most associated with were never together.

Thanks for the info! Wrapping the black tape around the bottom and cutting it over the opening there looks tricky.

Well on mine there was no opening.I had Russ leave it off of mine and apparently all his sound versions from the 2012 run of them don't have them either at my suggestion so anyone that want's to tape them will be able to do so more easily.

Is that all tape on there? What type if so? Also, what kinda washer died you use and how did you get that smooth button look on the screw? I have an extra Russ sonic I want to deck out like this.

Yes, that is indeed tape. It's a type of thin, marine grade tape for striping boats so it's pretty strong. I don't know what brand it is though. I forget since I threw the packaging away but any boating and marina supply store carries it as well as an automotive version made by 3M which is where I ordered the 1/16th inch tape.

As for the screw, it's a little harder to explain. see I used the smooth cap from a two part leather rivet, carefully removing it from the rivet with tin snips, then epoxied it to the head of a flat head socket screw and once it set, spun it in a dremel while filing the edge of the cap to match the angle of the screw head.

The washer is just for now but it's just a 1mm stainless precision washer from an electronics store near me. It's not staying though because that's not accurate to the Pertwee sonic. I'm going to custom machine the neck a bit to match it.

Oh another question are these kind of like shells or just metal props ^^, or do they have the potential to make sounds?

Well I didn't make this but in the description I mention that it's an FX sonic, so it definitely makes sounds, yes.

On this one I bought the ase sonic and redetailed it to look more accurate to the actual filming prop as well as the Character Options toy which was confirmed to me to be pretty darn close to accurate in the black striping on the grip. I just rebuilt the emitter halo and added the tape to the grip as well as retaped the upper section. I'm still not done with it though. I have a few more things to do to the emitter to make it sit right.

Yeah I'm really pleased so far. Just need to do a BIT more work. On the real prop the halo had about a 1/8th inch spacer on the neck between the black bullet there and the sleeve itself came up almost to the bottom of the halo to where it was nearly touching it. I just need to modify this one to match it.
