Zarbon awoke to the sound of voices conversing outside his room. Was it morning already? He contemplated getting out of bed or going back to sleep.

If he didn't get out of bed soon, his mother would surely bring someone in to collect him for his morning bath and that would be most undignified. He wasn't a baby. He was four years old, practically a grown up.

Still drowsy from sleep, he got up and made his way from the nursery to the adjoining boudoir of the empress. Absentmindedly kicking a stuffed elequine doll out of his path as he walked.

The empress sat patiently in her vanity chair as her handmaiden made some adjustments to the loose tresses of today's hairstyle.

Nearby, her secretary announced the day's planned duties. "-This afternoon you have a meeting with Lady Fortunella regarding this year's orchard harvest, then the merchants from King Shequasar's kingdom will be arriving with their wares for your inspection--"

Clymenia noticed Zarbon walking in from the corner of her eye and smiled. "Good morning Zarbon, you're up early."

Zarbon nodded and mumbled a good morning while climbing onto her reclining chair. He pulled a silk throw blanket over himself and snuggled in to wait until his bath was ready.

Another handmaiden walked in holding up two dresses for the empress to choose from. "Hmm, they are both lovely. Which one do you think I should wear today, Zarbon?" She looked in his direction expecting him to be standing on the chair and eagerly pointing at his choice like he usually did but there was no bright eyed face to be seen.
Her only answer was the soft sighs of a sleeping child. "I guess I'm on my own today." She chuckled to herself and made her selection.
