The haiku is about the tsunami in Japan.

This is thick black paper with thin painted paper on top of it. The white paper is painted with different materials and then oiled, making it more translucent. It is displayed on a window so the holes in the black paper let light through, which has this effect. It kind of looks like real life photoshop effects
