Description This is my first 'tutorial'. I was giving some tips to someone on a forum, which turned out to become some sort of tutorial, so I completed it for DA. I'm not really a tutorial person, because I think it is better to figure out things by yourself. But I have learned a lot from being in an art school for the past years and I thought it would be nice to share those things.

I think it is these little things that can have a major influence on your artwork. Even if you do not use it, it is important to at least be aware of it.

Please please let me know if this was any kind of helpful to you! Or any other feedback. Everything is welcome. I really want to know what you think of it.

And please share your work with me, if you think my tutorial has been of help with your development! <3 I really hope my tutorial can help haha

Oh and English is not my first language, so some things might be worded a little oddly. At least it is not worded as well as I wanted to, but some things are just hard to translate.

There actually is a lot more I could say, so maybe I will make a part 2 some day. Because this really only just focuses on the effects brightness and saturation.

Edit:
Wow! Thanks for the DD! It means a lot to me I wasn't sure if I should post this tutorial when I made it, afraid that it only made sense to myself XD But now I'm glad I did!

Nee hoor, dat klopt wel ongeveer, mijn gezicht is erg asymmetrisch. En omdat het een close-up is, lijkt het nog erger.Β

This is neat...

I think I've heard this kind of thing before, but not exactly this way. Maybe it's the examples.

In the tutorial, you've used the term 'vocal point' more than once. I thinkΒ you meantΒ 'focal point' like 'focus'. 'vocal'Β refers to sound, like 'vocal cords'.

I tried something with lighter and darker colors in a picture recently (I usually just pick whatever colors I think look good, but I thought I'd try going with really light focal points and a really dark background and keep it somewhat consistant instead of all over the place), but I think I ended up with some odd looking colors from trying to get the colors to match each other while at the same time sticking with them being as bright or dark as I was wanting. So I think I need to work on using color more.

Pompuri In reply to AsjJohnson [2013-10-08 04:59:10 +0000 UTC]

Ah how embarrassing! XD

Thanks for notifying me, I changed it!

You can still pick colors you think will look good, but not paint them with those exact colors. Like in my portrait the eyes are painted with purple. But (to me at least) they still look brown, when you see it you don't think 'why are her eyes purple'. So you can think this character would look good in blue pants, but that doesn't mean you have to paint it with blue, as long as the combination with the colors around it is right.Β

I can imagine that would be difficult, but just as this tutorial says, maybe you should not actually use black and white (or too close to black and white), it is hard to make a good palette in between those.Β

Well said and illustrated beautifully. Eyes trick us in a lot of ways. Taking the colors you have used out of context and placing them on a palette makes things a lot easier to understand. Great job!
