I was actually thinking about it a lot recently, cause my parents are VERY religious and my drawings upset them and they're always asking where I'm getting my influences too.
The best way I can describe it is that I have always been fascinated by nature, when I was a kid I was a HUGE dinosaur, amphibian, insect and reptile nerd and I had so many books about them, which I could recite off by heart. I was so dedicated to it, and of course I tried to draw them. But I've never been good at copying from life, so I would draw from my head instead, and if I was going to draw from my head, why NOT draw weird, fantastical creatures? xD
As I've grown as an artist almost every other one I've known has been adept at copying what they see, but why provide a service that almost everybody else can do better? My dream job is to draw, and I think that my best shot at getting that is to play to my strength and keep drawing the twisted creatures that my brain offers up.
Though there are a lot of things going on in the world that make me angry, so who knows I wouldn't be surprised if they are influenced by political situations or are in some way me rationalising things that are happening to me. c:

It's interesting what your fascinated by dinosaurs when your parents are religious.
- tell them that is better what is come out on the paper than staying in your head!
If you copy it's not art, it's skill, or a handwork if you please.. Which I think is freaking boring, everyone can learn it if they put enough effort into it.
Art, per my definition, is what comes from within. It's when you express something psychic in a physical way, like with drawing.
Keep them both up. You know both the artist and the drawtist.
You wanna draw? Like being an illustrator?
To "draw" is pretty many thing, and most of the time you draw sh*t you don't really want to. Ever tried to do a commission(I think that's the word, but I'm not sure)? What freaking sucks! Most people think your some kind of machine.
"Draw me something!"
"Like what?"
"Something COOL and SPECIAL"
"..."
Or the other one
"Draw me something"
"Like what?"
"ME!"
"..."
