Description This is a re-paint of a portrait painted from life back in 2016. It was always one of my favourite portraits, mainly because I loved the model's sombre expression and her almost invisible eyebrows and eyelashes. However, as time went on I saw more and more things that I wanted to fix. So, I decided to try a bit of a paintover and see how I might change it if I painted it now.

Here's the original portrait: Life Study - Portrait 27
This was painted using Krita, as always. It's an open-source painting program that I highly recommend.

I'd love to hear your feedback and critiques!

Interesting to compare the two!!! Your flesh tones are definitely better, more natural and the light overall is softer and more muted, which fits the dramatic light/dark difference. I like that you give her head more space here, it feels more like an traditional painting/portrait (same for the expression!) though I wouldn't mind having that little extra touch of lighter shade in the eyes to make them pop. Perhaps the model did have a bit of couperosa or otherwise just very warm tones on her nose and upper cheeks, but now it looks much more better - in the old one, there's a little too much pink/red and it gives her that almost "alcoholic" look Her lips and nose were very pronounced, I like them in this version much better, even though her expression is much more somber/sad now. Her bangs also don't feel like they're sitting on top of her head instead of being part of her head, you know? Much less sharp contrast there which is great!
I don't really have a lot of criticism about this version, I think you have come a long way since the old portrait and definitely to the better direction. I would maybe consider giving her body more shape, or at least some vague idea that she just doesn't disappear into darkness after the shoulder LOL Other than that, this is really nice!! I can't wait for another couple of years when you'll hopefully do a new repaint

Sorry I've taken so long to reply to you! I really appreciate the time you took to write such a thoughtful comment

I agree completely about very red nose and cheeks. I used to feel that to make a portrait interesting, it had to be colourful. So I always tried to exaggerate the colours and add brighter reds/oranges/pinks in skin than were actually there. Now I understand better that subtle colour changes work much better in a portrait. It is easy to still fall into that mindset of wanting a colourful portrait and therefore pushing the vibrant colours too far.

In the pursuit of simplicity in this version, I lost some details which as you point out might have improved the painting - some light in the eyes, and some shape to her body. It's always a balancing act between taking away what you don't need/is distracting, but keeping what adds interest and useful information.

Thanks again for your comment, I really appreciate it. I too am curious what a repaint of this portrait will look like in another couple of years!

Beautiful shading and use of light and color again! I love how you implemented a bit of cold colors in her hair where it's darker, makes the painting feel more dimensional <3

Thank you so much I'm happy you mention that bit of cooler colour in the hair - it's often amazing what a bit of cool/neutral colour in an overall warm painting can do. I need to remember to always play around with adding notes of cools in shadows because I often like the effect!

I love the eyes.  I don't know if they are actually more detailed than the rest of the portrait but they certainly seem that way, and somehow manage to stand out even though they're shadowed.  Or maybe it just looks that way to me because I seem to tend to look at eyes first Love the flowy hair too.

Thank you so much This whole portrait is really very simple, so I would say the eyes do have the most detail. Though I have seen other artists' portraits where the eyes have very little contrast/information, and we still look and the eyes and try to interpret them. It's very ingrained in us as humans, to connect through the eyes.

Thank you so much
Yes, over the years I think I've discovered that the more contrast you have and the stronger the shadows, the easier everything is! If the shadows are as strong as in this painting, then you don't really need any detail - the shadows do all the work for you.
