Description Ch 13 of 'Told by the Northmen': How Hermod made a Journey to the Underworld' Hermod is Baldur and Hoder's brother, and after Baldur's death Hoder asks him to go to the underworld to plead with Hel for Baldur's return. Sleipnir carries him on the quest.

'Nine long days and nine long nights rode Hermod towards the realms of ice and snow; and on the tenth morn he drew near to the golden bridge which spanned GiΓΆll, the greatest river in the world

'A maiden of pale and downcast mien kept this bridge, with unsleeping vigilance, and she now challenged Hermod as he approached..'

Elsewhere I find that the giant maiden is called Modgudr, and the bridge is thatched with gold, so I have made it a pontoon rather than an arched bridge. Modgudr translates as either 'Battle Weary' or 'Battle Frenzy'.

It looks like it's made from fog carved by the lashing wind. Very good indeed.

All of the Icelandic Sagas are excellent, but this one about Baldur is a major turning point for the Aesir. The drawing is pretty awesome, nice work!

Wow, I had never heard this story. Your picture matches the atmosphere of the description. You can really feel like Hermod is reaching the end of a ten day journey through ice and snow. I really like the bridge design too!

Thanks for your comments! I was worried about the bridge. I do like 'Told by the Northmen', especially the Baldur tales.

The bridge practically seals the whole deal! It looks really cool.
