Description
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.
(Colossians 3:1-11 ESV)
My church is going through series on Colossians, and it’s true as a christian who has been born again, we need to put to death our old way of life, not as a way to be saved, but because we have been saved and been raised with Christ, that’s why we need to change our life
Not easy of course

Yep. I'm not interested in any sexual content, obscene language, or anything of the sort, but it's hard to put away my worldly thoughts, especially when I suffer from OCD. I was diagnosed about a year ago. Not only that, but sometimes I get angry. Like, really, really angry, and I need to work on that. I have to try to be more patient since I absolutely hate it when someone pushes me (figuratively, not literally) or yells at me because I'm working at a slower pace than everyone else, or something is hard for me to understand. Besides, the golden rule (that was originally from the Bible) is "Do unto others as you would like to be done to you." And it goes on in the Bible, "even if they are your worst enemy. They need it the most." Well, that's paraphrased, but still. I'll try my hardest to do what is right.

Putting to death the old ways certain can be really difficult! Heck, they'll always be lurking around a corner, waiting to make you trip on your walk with God. It can be quite a surprise when something really obscure shows up as a problem. I recently realized I had let my pride become a bit too big, it doesn't happen often, but it definitely surprised me when I shocked myself with some behavior that was not acceptable. At least I was able to beat it back down with a mallet.
I'm just glad God forgives us when we stumble like this. It happens all too often. >.<

Yup, when we least expect it, something'll come crawling out of our imperfect souls and shock us.
Thank the living heavens it is, we'd be screwed if we weren't. |D

Always wondered: how did they handle 3:18, 20, and 22? They always came across a little rough for me.

This one?
"Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.
Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.
(Colossians 3:18-22 ESV)"
Paul was writing it to the entire christian in colossae and as you can guess, they all have different background, there are married one, children, father, bondservants, and masters. Notice that there are instructions for both complementary parties, wife and husband, father and children, bondservants and master, each of those role are responsible to God. Yes I know, submit is a dirty word in this day and age, but rather this submission is for the leadership in a household since wife and husband holds different role. Husband too, he's expected to love his wife, lead gently with loving attention, not by means of dictating the wife, but in every decision and step, leading with the wife in her best interest.
I'm sort of assuming you are irked by the fact that there is a mention of slavery (bondservant) in the bible? Yeah, I complained about that too, but then I notice that this verse is not condoning slavery in any way at all, rather speaking of the social context in those day where unfortunately slavery was common
And Paul advocated to christians who are slaves to be a good example of Christ for their master. It's a sad reality if we wonder why society in those time still hold slavery. But man, we only ended slavery in the UK in 1833 and 1865 in the US. Think about it, it's only 150 years or so from now ;---;
Oh well, mate! I don't think I explain well in text, I might miss anything and I don't think I am a good writer XD
Feel free to ask for clarification or even better since we're both in NSW feel free to visit my church if you're interested

There's more to slavery in the Bible than it just being socially accepted... There were two different types of slaves back in those days: the people who were forced into slavery at the hands of an oppressor, and those who willingly sold themselves into slavery as a means of living.
Yes, people willingly sold themselves into slavery. It was an economically viable method of making a living, as laws were strict (among those laws Colossians 3:22, which you mentioned, and several other Bible verses) which command a master to provide for his slaves needs. Food, clothing, shelter, all were made easily available without the willing slave having to worry.
And the unwilling slaves? Those who are kidnapped and forced into servitude? The Bible makes it clear that this is NOT acceptable. Exodus 21:16 and Deuteronomy 24:7 both give the same law, that no man is to kidnap another man and sell him; it commands the death penalty to anyone who is caught doing this, and even calls for the punishment of those who knowingly purchase unwilling slaves!
In the end the commands are for the benefit of all God's people. It is made clear that those who wish to be slaves must be treated fairly and as human beings, not property. And those who don't wish to be slaves? The people who kidnapped and/or sold them have a date with the stoning pit.

I would point out that the Puritans very much believed those passages, when the second slave ship arrived in the American colonies it landed at Plymouth, with a load of Africans. The Puritans placed the captian and his crew under arrest, freed the Africans, taught them how to sail and gave them the ship to sail back to Africa. I don't know what happened to the freed Africans, but the captain and his crew served out their imprisonment and were finally allowed to return to England as prisoners.

You're very welcome. I try not to let small histories like that get lost. Too many people these days try to deny the influence Christianity had on the early history of the US, because it doesn't fit their agenda.

yeah it's exactly the same in Australia, there are a lot of christianity values but it has now been claimed as just
"good humanity values because we're good"
