Description This illustration is based on the old Native American tale about the blind boy and the loon. The story is basically about this blind boy who has a wicked grandma who kicks him out of the house until he brings back food. So he goes off to fish and catches a loon in his fishing net. The loon cries and tells the boy that if he sets him free, he will restore the boy's eyesight. So the boy lets him go and the loon tells him to get on his back. The loon dives into the lake three times, and on the third time, the boy has perfect eyesight, and can also see what a mean person his grandma is, so he gets rid of her somehow.
The drawing is based on the diving part of the story, as you can see.
This is also an experimentation with watercolour pencils, touched up with some ink and pastels. Please give me your opinion on it

yes. This story is one of my faves. it depends I guess where you live about how it will end because apparently each inuit region has thier own telling of the story but the are all relatively similar. Apparently in one ending she dies by drowning and the other she is changed into a narwhal from her hair turning and twisting itself in the ocean. Each ending though has the malevolent granny being told by Luumiak (I beleivein some cases was the blind boys name.. if i remember rightly) that there's a great big balguga whale swimming in a fishing hole. He takes he to show her and when the biggest one comes the boy has tied a hapoon and she hooks the giant whale and well.. she goes for a ride lol.. a very deservedly NASTY ride too! Nice job here.

I was not expecting such a long comment on this old deviation of mine~

It's very interesting to hear about the tribal differences in the story, that's quite fascinating~ Thanks for taking to time to let me know c:

The blue wash to give the look of being under water is a really nice effect. Watercolors are a hard media to work with, you did a very nice job of controlling it. I always found it prone to wandering on the paper sometimes.
