Man, I could go on and on about fish needs and conditions and varieties... I'm still pretty novice, but damn do I love it. /r/Aquariums is the only reason I visit reddit any more. I'm getting some pygmy corydoras (singular is also corydoras) soon, which are the most adorable things ever.

I'm trying, I'm trying! Diversity is very important to me!

Oh, man, oh, man I could go on and on about that, but I haven't thought about it in so long since I don't visit any place that could really be considered "reddit." Man, I hate those people.

It probably has, and in my case so have I. It's gotten bigger for one thing—much bigger—and that means a general increase in entitled teenage riffraff. I've also taken off what I call "pony-tinted goggles," which is what I use to refer to the general fandom attitude of pony = good. Which is a pretty selective attitude, come to think of it, since the fandom can be pretty damn bitter much of the time. I'm glad I don't associate with it any more.

Sort of relatedly, here's a very interesting Round Stable article about Lauren Faust and the show. The tweet that they quote is really interesting, and I had no idea she said that: [link]

It is freaking adorbs. They snuffle around in the gravel and sit on stuff and sometimes takes gulps of air from the surface.

Dang, man. That article you linked me. That hits it right on the head! When I got into the community (remember I'm 4chan-oldschool here), it was all about being positive, and having a safe, welcoming community in the abyss of the internet. At least, that's how it seemed to me. But now, I've seen people commenting in threads saying that to "act pony-like" is stupid, and "love and tolerate" is bullshit, and it's just a TV show.

And they're right! It is just a TV show. I haven't really liked any of the recent episodes, and sometimes I forget to watch them until like a week after they come out. Because the TV show didn't matter! It was a means of finding other people who were sick of the cynicism and vitriol that propagates on the internet (and in real life). I could talk forever about the amazing things the show did, and the early community, but I won't. 'Cause I know you're picking up what I'm putting down.

Anyway. Those fishes! You're making me want to draw fishes. Why aren't you drawing fishes?!

Oh, yeah, you joined around Applebuck Season, wasn't it? You must have a much better perspective on this stuff than I do, since I only joined right after the season one finale, when Magneto was still a thing. I think striking a balance between being friendly and positive versus being an obsessively flattering entertainment hole is important, and not very easy to do. Look at deviantART comments. But then, looking at places like reddit, people are nasty and acidic and generally hypocrites. Of course, that might just be deviantART and reddit being deviantART and reddit, but it might also be bronies. I don't think being positive is at all a bad thing, but being unrepentantly and indiscriminately enthusiastic about anything pony-related isn't ideal, either.

I stayed pretty hands-off during much of my time as a fan, not becoming truly enthusiastic—god forbid involved—until the summer I started drawing. As such, I think I never got to experience the fandom at its best, and jumped in right before it nosedived to where I find it now. I think I've always had a little bit of a problem with cynicism (I refused to flap my arms on a merry-go-round at some kind of fair when I was little), and My Little Pony—or season one, anyway—gave me something really purely nice to combat that. It wasn't subversive, it didn't play on your expectations, it was just pure, quality entertainment. But then I went into the fandom and found the antichrist. Or rather, the anti-pony. It was cynical, over-analytical, and recalled all the things I didn't like about fandoms: obsessive theorizing, heated arguments, shitty OCs, fanfictions and more. It was cynical, it was loud, it was self-obsessed and it was awful. Sure, I made a few good personal friends through it, but the megaphones and the billboards of the fandom—those I never got over. It brought back all the cynicism I'd dealt with—and for a little while overcome—and imbued it heart and soul into the show. Now I can't avoid it; I've avoided re-watching season one, partially because I don't have time, but mostly for the reason Lauren Faust gave in her quote: "I just can’t do it. It’s too sad for me. And I want to remember it the way I had it in my head." Innocence for me isn't something lost with childhood, it's gained and lost with exposure over and over again. And it sucks.

Anyways, fish! Fish! That's a really good idea, maybe I should draw my platy, or some pygmy cories! Sounds like fun! Dang, I love fish.

porkchopsammie In reply to Onsaud [2013-02-06 04:00:31 +0000 UTC]

I've never really been part of a "fandom" before. I'm not really the obsessive fan type! But Ponies.

I've noticed as I get older I find myself feeling content to remember things instead of re-experiencing them. Old games, books, etc. Sometimes I take more joy in just remembering how I felt about them the first time.

And I definitely need to distance myself from the pony community. It seems like unless you read new episode spoilers half a week before the episode airs and draw a picture (also full of spoilers!), you've got no chance of getting any views. And people used to comment! And I used to have to walk uphill in the snow!

I like the observation that oversaturation is often the issue with things losing their special quality. I tend to find a thing that I like and then get super absorbed in it for a while until I burn out.

Well dang, man, it's good to know it's not just me. And plus, I learned a bunch about fish!

Neither am I... I used to be really big on Android stuff, but that wasn't exactly a "community." I'm over that, anyhow. Android is still better, though.

I feel the exact same way. I read this one book, A Walk in the Woods (a really good book, by the way; a travel memoir by the same author as A Short History of Nearly Everything, if you've heard of it), at least five times. The last time was several years ago, and now I don't really feel the need to any more; I've enjoyed it, the enjoyment's in there, and I don't really need it again. I'm guessing this is a pretty common part of growing older (if not old), and experiencing things more carefully and thoroughly without the need for constant stimulus.

I've already distanced myself! I never really drew anything episode-relevant in the first place and I've gotten my fair share of attention, but damn are you right—episode-connected artwork released just as the episode airs is marzipan in a trashcan for swarms of clamoring bronies. It's horrific. I still get some comments now and again, some of them thoughtful, but most of them I don't really care for unless they're by someone I "know" in some capacity. Most are inane and kind of annoying. Seven miles without boots!

That seems to be the case. People may rant and moan that people who decry mass popularization as boors and hipsters, but many of them have a point. Things generally are better before they're popular, or at least on a massive scale. I seem to go the same way with personal fads.

Oh, man, oh man. I agree. Oh, and I could go on for hours about fish. They're the best.

Android! I'm a big fan of Android. Not a fan of Apple's walled garden.

A walk in the woods is by Bill Bryson? I'll have to check it out. I don't do enough non-fiction reading.

I miss being able to watch a new episode and not already know what's going to happen. Either reddit or my DA watch list will make sure I'm exposed to spoilers well before I could watch the episode. Like this whole Twilight thing. I personally don't care one way or the other, but man would that have been a surprising episode to see if I hadn't known!

Speaking of fandoms, do you watch Adventure time?

Whoo! Green robots! Do you have one? I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I rooted it, which is supposedly easy, but since I know squat about computers it was the most nervewracking thing ever. But it was worth it, I installed the most recent CyanogenMod to get the Android updates Verizon would never let me have. Whooo.

Bill Bryson is pretty hilarious. He writes mostly travel books, but he's written a few on language and history. I think my all-time favorite is A Short History of Nearly Everything. It's sort of a everyday account of science, as well as the history and people behind it. Even if you already know some of the information, it's still a fantastic read.

I've thinned out my deviantWATCH list to people who I "know" on some level, and I don't go on reddit. It's peaceful. You're right about that Twilight spoiler, though; I'm personally not a fan, but I think I might've preferred to be surprised.

Yes I do! I don't participate in the fandom, though—I don't participate in any fandoms at all, really. I also watch a bunch of Regular Show, which I think is just as good.

The nexus looks swag! I went with the S3 because I knew people who had it, and it'd been years since I had a smartphone so I was kind of out of the loop.

I ended up getting some fancy pantsy earbuds that do a better job staying in my ears because of the pure rage produced when my earbuds would fall out (or, just one, because my left ear-hole is bigger than my right??).

I also devised arcane systems of propping my phone up to stay at a viewable angle.

Sometimes I just listen to music (like a plebian!) What always impresses me is girls reading books or magazines on a treadmill. I would throw all the way up if I tried that.

The GNex is pretty swag, but I've got wicked screen burn after only a few months. Thank goodness for CyanogenMod and color-tinting.

Good call on the S III, and a good phone. Android fo lyfe!

I saved up a whole bunch to get some Klipsch earbuds, which I love. They're pricey, but they sound fantastic and feel great. And they've got a two-tone ribbon cable so you how it faces and twists, which is great because twisted earbuds are gigantic pet peeve of mine.

I once had an earbud pop out, wrap itself around a railing and grab its own cord, then pop right out of the little fork in the cord. I wept.

I'm imagining some sort of witchcraft trial where a woman is accused of slaughtering infants for the devil, suckling the devil and having the devil prop up her smartphone on the treadmill. What exactly is your method? Ours have these little shelves on them, so I just rely on those.

Only music? I only do that on the machines where there's nothing to put the phone on! It's so boring!

I can't imagine how people could read text on those things... watching moving pictures is hard enough.

porkchopsammie In reply to Onsaud [2013-02-16 23:50:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah Klipsch earbuds look really nice. I probably should have saved up and gotten some of those! Mine wrap around the ear with a little cable thingy to help keep them in place.

The treadmills at my place have little shelves for ipods that have ipod charging cables attached. I coil the ipod cable up and it props my phone up. Maybe it's not as elaborate of a ritual as I thought.

Oh man, I saw it. Well, in terms of the episode... the animation was pretty nice, but the story and pacing were boooring. Just a problem at the beginning of the episode that's spotlessly resolved from the get-go and then poof—happy ending! Dull.

Yeah it's a big 24 hour corporate mega-gym type of thing. It's close to me, and they have a bunch of equipment. I still feel kinda dirty going there, though.

The episode had baaaaad pacing. Actually I think all of season 3 has had bad pacing. I really liked the beginning part of the episode, and wish it could've been a whole episode on its own. I'm.... Conceptually OK with Twilight being a princess/alicorn, but sort of like... At the very end of the series, or in a fanfictiony way.

Also, she looks butt-ugly with those wings stamped on. Like, bad design.
But yeah, a big change like that needs a 2 parter all to itself!

Grumble.

Oh, yeah, I've seen those around... this one in particular that I know of (it's in a very gay-proud neighborhood), but I don't visit it. Why do you feel dirty, because they kiss Apple's brushed aluminum feet for breakfast?

It had SHIT pacing. There was no story arc, just a story slope. Ooh, I like that line, I'm probably gonna use that in more arguments. But, yeah, terrible. I don't see how they can continue the series with her as a princess, nor do I like it happening at all. Bleh.

Yes, she does look bad! Cluttered! Wings work better on a more princess-like frame like Luna or Celestia, but if they gave Twilight one of those it would be so much worse... but it'd be a pretty effective alternative to working out to get in shape.

It really did need two parts. When the credits rolled, I was really surprised; I kept wondering where the second part was. Bleh.

I felt off about season 3 and never really thought much about it. I just figured I was falling out of the fandom and such. But I do think there's a distinct difference in quality. Like, the production values are higher, but the pacing is shit. It's a dang bummer. I'll always have seasons 1 and 2~~~~.

And pokemons. God I love pokemons.

I've become less and less happy with both the fandom and the show, though I'm not sure to what extent it's just me or if it's actually changing.

Production values do seem higher, like all the animation and stuff, but I agree, I think the writing has taken a veer for the worse. It's hardly even a girls' show anymore. It was conceived as a girls' show that would change girls' shows, and I don't think it succeeded.

Man, I just rewatched a bunch of season 1 and it was so much better than I remembered. It's a little strange to have nostalgia for something from just two years ago, but I sure did.

Pokémon is fun! I know freakish amounts about it despite never having owned a game in my life! Oh, and I finally drew a fish!

I think bronies ruined it Wait we've had this discussion before, crap, we're boring.

Season 1 (and most of season 2) was SO GOOD.

Pokemon is the best (way to even accent the e). I'm not actually super good at it, because I build my team mainly around who is the cutest/most badass (with only a vague idea of type combinations). I always play like.. 75% of the way through the game and then lose steam and stop playing. And I do this every year. I have a sickness.

I saw your fish! I was like "yayyyyy". I'm always quite envious of your control of linework. The fish is cute, and has a little moustache.

Oh no! Veer left, veer left! Find new territory!

Season one was amazing. It just has this immutable charm to it that I think has slowly been lost. Some of season two has it too; The Last Roundup I really liked, aside from the Derpy non-debacle.

I played Pokémon briefly on an Android emulator app, where I had Emerald and FireRed. I think that's the only time I've ever actually played Pokémon. In any case, I did pretty much the same thing, despite knowing crazy amounts about the game. I just chose the Pokémon that appealed to me. Flygon da man. So is Heracross.

Say, have you seen the new Pokémon "X" and "Y?" They're threeee-deeee.

I saw you were like "yayyyy!" And I don't know what I'm like 'cause I haven't been it yet!

Everybody comments on the moustache, but I can never really see it! I guess if it has anything it's a fu manchu.

What do you mean by control of linework? Thanks anyhow!

porkchopsammie In reply to Onsaud [2013-02-23 03:41:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh my goodness, the Derpy thing. Probably the first time I remember the fandom getting out of control.

I kind of dig pokemon for the same reason I dig ponies. Everything's pretty safe and happy in pokemans world. It's like "oh, you're a teenager, better go out and have an adventure! No one is going to rape and murder you!" And like, nobody's lonely 'cause they all have pokemon. WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER FUTURE.

But it's also a game about taking wild animals away from their friends and family, and stuffing them in balls, then uploading them to a computer (presumably destroying their original body).

I'm gettin stoked for X and Y. It'll be like the only use my 3ds ever gets.

I guess fu manchu is a better term than moustache. He looks like a wise Chinese man.

I just mean that you have nice linework. It's smooth, and confident, and such. My hand shakes and wobbles like a mo' when I draw.

That was crazy ridiculous. She was a martyr who hadn't suffered a thing. The worst was all those sappy "I just don't know what went wrong!" pictures that people churned out like butter. It was sick, in a bad way.

It is pretty idealistic... nobody's gonna send 10-year-olds out into the wilderness and cities to fend for themselves in the real world. Also, where do they get their education? Do they just postpone it until they get a grant for being the very best?

But they're all so happy, and the trainers treat them with love and care and affection and pit them against other animals in an arena of semi-death!

I hope they don't get rid of sprites, though. I like sprites.

A wise old corydoras who mentors a young kuhli loach on the art of karate in order to hold his own against the prevailing gang of pea puffer fish. (Pea puffer fish are actually notorious assholes; you pretty much can't keep them with anything but shrimp.)

Ha, thanks! I just do it by making a ton of frantic strokes and almost as many ctrl-z's until I get a line I like. Sometimes it takes days on end.

The world of pokemon is all about on the job training, man!

It's true, pokemon's one of the last remaining sprite-art games. And there's sooo much sprite art in the games. It'll be sad to see them go to 3d models, but hopefully they can pull it off in a way that still has charm?

Are shrimp the biggest assholes of the sea?

When I try for clean linework, I also ctrl-z a TON. I think it's the only method for that really immaculate, bold, linework.
