_______________________

I decided to create this stencil because represent perfectly the subjectivism concept (in my opinion).

Anyone, at first sight, sees an African man behind a wire net and a typical landscape of his same continent. The image evoke instinctively a strong feeling of pity; this happens because emotions are stronger than reasoning in human nature.
But try to keep a different point of view for a moment…
Try to lay aside the social prejudices of everyday life…
If you continue to see only an African man and his land jailed behind a wire net, in truth, the only one that could be behind the net are you (and the bird on the background, symbol of freedom, gives you an evidence)…

(In other words the wire net has not got other prolongation in the image that gives you a proof that the African man is behind the net; the wire net divides you from him, so you are not sure he’s jailed!)

My artwork and comment do not intend to offend in any way. It invites to reflect, to consider and understand that everything is relative to the observer's point of view and is therefore Subjective (hence the title). If you try to abandon prejudice, real brotherhood is truly possible.

Sometimes it's not even just prejudice but just things we see in TV, read in papers etc. Things that are just brought to us in a certain way, that sometimes are just a lie, and we believe it cause we don't know the truth. I honestly thought he was jailed behind the wire as well, and as I read your comment i had to smile because you are so right. It's hard and you have to tell yourself over and over again not to have prejudged opinions and to take everything as it truly is.

you generated a beautiful concept, i'd like to add just one thing: if you tell yourself over and over the truth as it talks to your mind, it'll become natural and instinctive to take it as the only way to see, feel and perceive the world. If you have it in your soul, just let it talks to you. Sorry for my english, I hope you intend what I tried to say.

Just as the African people, in Brazil or even in any other country does not necessarily have to be black, but just be owned by a socially marginalized class. We have those eyes alienated and even pretend they do not see. But when you end up reversing that we think we are stuck, leading to a "fight" personal.
Anyway was a great work.
take care.

consideration: where it reads the correct black is negro.
I emphasize that my message has no racist.

I've to be honest with you... I don't understand so well your phrase «But when you end up reversing that we think we are stuck, leading to a "fight" personal». If you'll try to use some synonyms I'll be glad to give you a complete answer.

However I'm agree with the consideration you did in the first part: they have not necessarily to be coloured, but the pseudo-segregationist behaviour against coloured, of a large part of (ignorant) italian people is a theme nearer to my culture and everyday life than others. For this reason and as a matter of fact I consider African beauty as one of the best, I decided to represent a man which comes from this continent.

By the way in italian language we use the term black people as the correct expression to identify a man coming from Africa.
That beacuse the term "negro", which is an (offensive) italian word too, comes from "negriero" that means a slave trader.
However I don't know the english correct way to define it but I understood your No-racist thought.

bbhells In reply to Potsy89 [2010-10-11 21:03:30 +0000 UTC]

the phrase was referring to changing the field of vision. Where would be the reversal of the black not being arrested, but who sees the work(he is arrested), it being attached to things that hark back to past centuries. concepts and so on. In Brazil we speak descendent african, the word negro has no weight how the word black. But they are cultural issues as you said.
I also agree with you that the beauty of Africa is unique and is therefore the most beautiful.
My intention was not to create controversy ok. sorry if somehow it was created.
take care dear

OK.. know I undertand better than before the central idea of your thought, and I'm totally agree with your opinion!

So you have not created any kind of controversy and even if that where the case, you only explain your consideration and I consider myself quite open minded to accept another point of view. Finally I hope you'll write other interesting comments like that on the future works I'll submit! I'm glad to talk with interesting people like you!

You have a message in your art and thats what makes it great.. longing is portrayed very well in in his eyes and the reflection of someone standing on the other side infront of him. Love the colours and the sky - it goes vey well with the mood.
