Description Because Dark Lolita style is awesome.

Lorelei loves frilly things like this. A.T. only likes them when SHE'S not wearing it. The closest she was willing to get was to wear a boy's outfit. Not that she isn't girly, she just doesn't like wearing dresses or skirts.

Also, it seems only natural to me that Lorelei would carry a lacy umbrella with her in the bright sunlight. Someone with such a pale complexion is at risk of getting a bad burn, and she doesn't like sun tan lotion.

She doesn't really like tanning at all.

Anyway, I know the background is bullshittery, but I tried. xD It was also kinda late at night, and I don't usually do backgrounds. But whatever, it's alright.

BTW, I made a speed paint of my process drawing it.

I watched the speedpaint on mute, because my mother thought I was in one of my moods thanks to the music; I had to explain to her that I was just fine, thank you, and I had no choice in the matter. Her reply was 'to just shut the bloody thing up so she could think.' Seeing all of it makes me realise how complex the whole damn thing is. This means, yes, I'm giving you The Critique. Take a deep breath.

I see a few things you could improve on. None of them are anatomical (these are chibis, after all, and I have nothing to say on that subject.) My main concern is with shading, actually (yeah, I know, gasp). I have no issue with cell-shading (basically, the idea of blocks of color for shape, which is the style of shading used in this genre). But the key to cell-shading is getting the colors just right. You've improved fantastically on understanding the underlying hues in skin and hair tone, but the degree of variation in color in clothing and man-made things is still a little flat.

(Mind you, I am nit-picking. I think of it the same way my first art teacher did, E*** [that's your name, not a cussword; I don't know if you put your name up or not]. When I get to the details and speak to you seriously and forwardly, it means I deeply respect the work you have done and know that you would invest in the improvement a serious critique would provide.)

Consider the umbrella. I saw that you worked from a reference for refining the shape, but start thinking about using "natural light" photographs (especially those taken by professional photographers, but not for advertisements) for color reference as well. While you understood that the panels of the umbrella create a moderation in shade, the variation was too extreme for you to create the effect of a gentler degradation to darkness in the far right panels, which are in shadow according to the light source. Think about the same idea in the shoes on Lorelei - would shoes obscured by the hoop skirt be in full light and be the same shade as the rest of the dress? You already have a great eye in that you can tell when something's wrong. You can fix this easily.

The wrinkles in the clothing are next. They're not bad - you just need to draw from a reference again, look at how the light falls on clothing and judge which wrinkles and folds are the most important to imply. Also easily fixed. Trust your eye. Eventually, experience from study will mean you won't have to work from an exact reference for the clothing. You will be able to work from previous experiences with similar types of clothing.

I love the detail in the clothing. I love the shading in the skin, hair, and eyes. The three years I've known you, you've really improved.

Wow, thanks! So that's what one of your serious artist critiques is like? Shoot, maybe I'll have you give me more of them. I NEED TO GROW SOME BALLS ANYWAY.

Yeah, the shading for clothes and things are really off. I haven't focused much on those things during my process of improvement, so they're really off.

You're gonna have to come over and explain more about the umbrella. I had a hard time trying to understand what you meant xD Do you think I should add some shine where shine should be, or should I have added more shadow? Or is the placement of the shadows all off on it?

I'm surprised you didn't have any tips on the crappy-ass hydrangea bushes... OTL

Well, I can give you tips on the hydrangeas, but you said you weren't really trying on them, so I don't know what you can and cannot do with them.

I'll talk to you about the umbrella and stuff next time, yeah.

It's not that I wasn't trying, it's more that I kinda didn't know what to do. ;A;

Alright. Well, I can tell you what I know, though it's not my strong suit.
