Description What happens when you take a mantis shrimp, a coconut crab, and a spiny lobster? Well, you get this flashy-as-hell redrawn/designed version of this critter [link] . I added the stomatopod eyes and signalling antenna-scales (the rainbow-cloured fins), mainly because I really like the way mantis shrimp communicate. It's suitably alien, I think.

This was mainly an excuse to play with pencil crayons again. Thoughts?

Seems more like a derived crustacean than an convergent prawn like alien, but still really goo!

Oh, another thing, does it see polarized light like a mantis-shrimp?

I really like the combination of ink and colored pencil here. The water ripple light effects are muted, but cool.

See, that's actually some stripes (markings) I fucked up a little. I'm glad it ended up looking cool.

I see.
I actually like this colorful creature better than the recent brown patterned versions. Why the shift to boring colors?

Well, technically, you could do an alien ecosystem any number of colors you want. But by doing it earth tones, it looks more believable to the average viewer then a big multicolor critter. That being said, I don't know if the earth tones will end up even being the final colors.

Perhaps those flag-shaped palps contrast with the rest of the animal to aid in communication. I remember reading that human irises are smaller than animal irises so you can see the difference between white and iris and tell where the person is looking---communication aid. I suppose the same must be true for eyebrows, and perhaps even colored irises (if a person has light eyes and you're standing close enough, you can see the pupil contract, which might communicate important information)

The idea of a huge mantis shrimp that can chase you out on land is suitably chilling.
Better rethink that crab cake I'm heating up in the oven.

GREAT alien concept, I gotta agree with the sentiment that it's wild colors set it apart from the drab and gloomy sentients we usually see- really bold choice that I think works super well here.
The tentacles are my favorite part of its anatomy and probably the most distinctly offworld about it. In the same vein, however, I also must agree that it's a tad too earth-like. Maybe simply adding another set of eyes or another small anatomical change, like the tentacles, could effectively distance itself from Terran fauna.

Overall a really great design and cool concept, instant fav yet again my friend.

color scheme = WIN. the only thing i would want to see in addition, even though I'm afraid it might make it look too terrestrial ... claws!!

M0AI [2009-09-21 02:14:50 +0000 UTC]

It's beautiful, and I'm a sucker for Stomatopods, but I think this is actually quite a bit less alien than the aliens in the movie. It's less anthropomorphic, that's for sure, but now it looks more like an earthly crustacean. I'd alter the body plan, give it different limbs and joints.

povorot In reply to M0AI [2009-09-21 04:06:57 +0000 UTC]

I agree. I'm very pleased with it - but it seems more like a really interesting hypothetical earth critter then full-on alien. So far, I'm feeling really good about a few elements - the tentacles and the mandibles. I also want to include the stomatopod-style signal antennae, for good measure - but those are the only elements I'm really set on. Any suggestions for alienating it? (forgive that pun, but still)

Laughing-Dove [2009-09-21 01:31:38 +0000 UTC]

I love it, and it would make for a wonderful and more interesting redesign...but it looks a little too earthy. It essentially looks like your average shrimp...but since these creatures were terrestrial, wouldn't they be more beetle like? It's the eyes and the side-fins that really do it. I still adore it, though. <3

povorot In reply to Laughing-Dove [2009-09-21 04:19:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. The eyes and side-fins really end up making him look mad shrimpy...

Laughing-Dove In reply to povorot [2009-09-21 11:31:32 +0000 UTC]

Methinks if you sunk the eyes into the carpace and relocated the side fins to function as eye shades/protectors it would be mad funky. :3
