Description
Mircea Eliade was a historian of religion, fiction writer and philosopher. He is one of my favourite writers. His short story, With the Gipsy Girls, tackles a reccurent theme in his work: escaping historical time.
The story starts in a hot summer afternoon, when the piano teacher Gavrilescu realises that he forgot his bag at his student's house. He gets out of the tram, and after a long wait in the scorching heat, he decides to walk back. On his way he passes a gipsy house, with a big garden full of nut trees. Attracted by the cool shadow, he enters the garden. A girl takes him to a little house where an old gipsy lady offers him the possibility to choose 3 girls for 300 lei, a gipsy, a jewish and a greek girl. Then he is taken to another house, where the 3 girls wait for him. There, he is put to the test: he has to guess which one is the gipsy girl. It's a tricky task, as things are not what they seem.
So here is one of the 3 girls. Can you guess which one is she?
