Hm...Can you explain number 1 please? I don't understand what you mean by "Duplicate the layer of the AREA where you want to apply the pattern." How do I make it to where the pattern only appears in the shirt? And how can I change the color? And lastly, say I want to put a pattern like the flowers and designs like Kagome is wearing here: [link] How would I put the pattern/design on only PART of the clothing, like the yellow flower on her shoulder? Thanks very much for the tut and the help!

You must define an area where the pattern will be, I do it by selecting the same area like I had when I coloured first time (I save layer with plain colour usually, shading is in another layer, so click that unshaded layer). Then when you drop a bucket with a pattern there, it will fill only the selected area. I duplicate because I would destroy my first layer (or you can do that into a new layer too).
Changing colour is easy, Layer > Colours > Recolour/Change hue, saturation etc.
When you are using a pattern from another image, put it in a new layer above the plain colour, fix it where exactly you want it, then select everything around the shirt and delete it on the pattern layer.
I hope it was not too confusing, feel free to ask again.

Rather ask some Photoshop CS users, see tutorials and ask there.

You just have to find the right buttons in your program, but the principles are the same.

The interface is different, but the functions are the same. So you only have to find where is what, but you can use these tricks.
