Out of curiosity, what settings did you play with to get it to look like this? I use Paint Shop Pro 8, but I might be able to find the equivalents in the program...

on Photoshop CS3 (i'm on a 30 day trial for free right now--love it)
i used filters --> render --> lighting effects
then i did i believe it was a soft omni spotlight on the heart

yeah i did... but i guess b/c i did it with natural lighting (or perhaps bc i suck lol) the pic was really grainy and i couldn't get a clear trace on it???

i tried to leave the original color in the picture and then turn the rest black and white but it didn't look right... i suppose with more work i could get it??

You could create another layer. So one layer b/w and the other is color and in the b/w you delete where the heart is so the color will show through.

i tried that.. i think bc the quality of the picture was so low/grainy.. it just made it look kind of fake??? i dunno

If U want, U can blurred the color one. That will remove the grain.
