Description Hey everyone! I'm still working on my trades/sketches/prizes so worry not, but, I did manage to finish my tutorial. This is my first one so I hope it turned out well and managed to help it.

Also, please read the description! There are some things I didn't cover or didn't cover enough that I'd like to talk about. I'm also thinking about making a part two in case I have too much to say...

Anyway, yes. I used my character Sherry Mason for this example and a lot of the things I describe here made her look more interesting. Her jacket is fur-trimmed, fashioned with a stripe (and a design on the back) and is made of a bulky material compared to her silkier and form-fitting cross-top shirt. Colours are also important, it's good to experiment with what works. I have five concept Sherry designs of different colour schemes, you know.

A lot of my characters came from this thinking. Cutting holes into the clothing helped Tsaga (whose capelet is cut into three sections) and Renee (whose uniform is shoulderless). Patterns are everywhere - Hina's outfit especially. And design, texture and material and surprisingly super important.

One thing I really wanted to cover but didn't was that think of these things as clothing. Sounds obvious, right? But a lot of people don't. They have tarps or wraps with no real beginning or end or even a way that it would stay on the person! Also, consider your character waking up and putting these clothes on everyday, right? If they have two different stockings, five arm bands, a fishnet shirt, a turtleneck a dress and two skirts it'd be a nightmare! Unless that's the intention, you should keep in mind to make your outfits realistic in that right.

Also, you must always keep in mind your character and setting. Another obvious but often ignored point. There are so many "tomboys" running around in miniskirts and stockings that it's downright silly! The character you describe would not wear that! You need to tailor your outfits to the character; sometimes you may even find their clothes weird or dislikeable but it's their style, not yours.

Well I'm sorry about my tutorial, it is a bit patchy being my first... but I do hope it helps. If you have any questions or would like an outfit critique, let me know! And let me know if you think I should do a part two, as well... I was thinking of covering more fantasy/medieval outfit but i don't know. But my opinion is only that, yeah? An opinion and at the end of the day, your character's outfit should be pleasing to you most of all.C:

Happy creating everyone!

I know it's been a while. But I took your advice on one particular character whose design is based on both Rin Kagamne from Vocaloid and Ichirin Kumoi from Touhou.

I like this! I like how you really just list points of observations of possibilities instead of "For example, I did this, but you could do whatever you want" < - Nothing wrong with those, but it's nice to see something a little different.

This should be very helpful! I always had trouble with clothing. First I was worried about copying someone or making it plain but I figured a lot of styles are common and doesn't mean that having a shirt drawn in the same style alone is copying. I get a lot of inspiration from actual clothing. Than the next after making an outfit that was fitting for the character is drawing all those pesky folds and wrinkles and texture.

They all have really crazy outfits. I know it sounds like a pain, but would you please take a quick look at them and let me know if they suck?

How cool of you to make a tutorial! I like it! I've done things like this that were recommended in the tutorial before. I think you're very good at designing outfits ^^

PrimroseMoon In reply to G-em [2010-05-26 20:05:52 +0000 UTC]

Well I tried to at least.xD I'm glad you like it though! You have done? Smart! I'm glad you have, though most of them are obvious a lot of people never do them and instead throw a ton of accessories on their characters.

Awww, thank you. I'm alright at it.xD

Yeah, I've been really into outfits lately. It all started when I posted that journal about Bellator only wearing one outfit. After I got some recommendations, I started trying out different outfits I could think of for him and eventually I was hooked XD

No prob! ^^

Yes, I wholeheartedly believe that and it's a bit sad.D: Sometimes I'll look at someone's character and go... WHOA! What the heck are they wearing!? D:

Aww, thank you so much! I'm glad, material's fun to work with for me. Well, shading it, that is.xD

piyoh99 [2010-05-24 22:38:34 +0000 UTC]

I might try this! I never have many ideas on outfits.... So I have less good looking ones. I might get some inspiration. I seem to be more willing to do things if I see a tutorial on it. Like I know how to draw slightly good(well... better than I used too...)
But I look at a tutorial and I seem to draw more. Wierd huh...

PrimroseMoon In reply to piyoh99 [2010-05-26 22:32:16 +0000 UTC]

It's not weird at all.C: I'm the same way, tutorials are really encouraging in a weird kind of way! And I'm glad to hear mine helped motivate! If you do some outfits, show them to me, yeah? That'd be fun!
