Well, damn, there goes the novelty of my setting.
Which was also supposed to have space fighters modeled after fighter jets. Case in point, the F-104, and I'm pretty sure that's a F-101 next to it.

Cool things will attract cool ideas... for this, I literally went through an aircraft guide book from the early 50's and sketched up one or two "space" fighters based on each one that looked interesting.

I'm going to do some 3D Models based on these drawings if you don't mind. I'll drop your link when I post the model. Is this cool? Thanks!

I love your designs, upgrades from the 50's.
Lets see... u upgraded a Draken, Mig-21, Thunderbolt, Starfighter, Mirage III, An-114, Vulcan and others might be from Macross Plus?

Thanks! XD
Was I right about any of them? And is the B-47's nickname, the "Canberra"? I can't remember if it is or not...
I do know that the crews loved it because it was a "bomber that handled like a fighter". I guess that would be true, since "fighter" at that time probably still brought planes like the P-51 or the Spitfire to mind.

PrinzEugn In reply to Paradur187 [2008-10-29 02:33:15 +0000 UTC]
Canberra would be the B-57, but that was also a very popular aircraft. It had a big enough wing that it could outmaneuver smaller fighters at high altitude. The B-47 Stratojet was mainly just really, really fast for a bomber at that time. I think it could outrun any operational fighter when it was introduced into service. I think it also had fighter style-controls and a fighter-like cockpit.

I thought it was an F-86, but you're probably right. I'm pretty sure Chuck Yeager was flying it and was somewhat embarrassed to have his ass proverbially kicked by a bomber, being a die-hard fighter pilot.

Personally, I don't think intakes are useless in space. In fact, I think the best engines would work both in the air and space.
A good example of this would be the Scimitar ([link] ).

IVNTHETRBL [2008-04-16 02:22:44 +0000 UTC]
These are nice but I see one problem: Several fighters appear to have air intakes which are useless in space.

PrinzEugn In reply to IVNTHETRBL [2008-04-16 19:09:35 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, most of these are explicitly modeled after aircraft, so they will look like aircraft. I definitely can do more "realistic" space fighters, but these were a lot of fun to do.

uh, space fighters don't need wings... cuz there isn't anything to use them on... you know, no air for generating lift.

Sure space fighters don't need wings for space combat, but what about atmospheric combat?

PrinzEugn In reply to capn-midnight [2007-08-01 16:46:28 +0000 UTC]
Artistic license, bitch!
Besides, wings on these suckers serve as places for weapons hardpoints, and the ones I did later on all have thrusters on the wings for maneuvering(the little circle things)
I'll be doing a lot more designs for bigger ships that won't be based on aircraft.
