Description ...Dogs are known for being loyal! I get it now.

Isabelle in Smash
Isabelle was a very late addition to this project, added at the same time as the Squid Sisters and for the same reason: she's sort of become the de facto mascot of the Animal Crossing games, showing up in all the spinoffs, in general Nintendo advertisements and she even got two Amiibo.
I think she's a good character though. A solid design and works as the mayor's aide - and you, the player are the mayor - so she's about the closest thing to the main character you can get.
But I'd have a hard time seeing her as a fighter. Everything in Animal Crossing is very relaxed and comfortable so the high octane Smash battles seem out of place for most Animals. However...Isabelle did get some kind of oblique battle experience in the form of a Mii costume with a terrifying head and a party popper gun. PLUS she was an assist trophy! So I think that's a lot of evidence of her popularity, though a full playable role still seems unlikely to me.

Isabelle in Animal Crossing
It was quite surprising for Isabelle to be elevated to her such a high profile role considering how late she joined the franchise, but it would be hard to imagine an Animal Crossing game without her now.
So what might the future hold for her? Will she continue to aide the mayor? Will she do something else? I get the impression that character professions don't really change in Animal Crossing world so I wouldn't expect her to become a travel agent or something. On the other hand, if anybody's going to get special treatment, it's going to be Isabelle.

UPDATE

Isabelle in Smash Ultimate

Of course the best thing about Isabelle in Smash is that I don't need to draw her again.

This was one I didn't see coming, though I had already "predicted" that if there was going to be another new Animal Crossing character it would probably be her.
Having never played a game in this series I have no investment so my reaction was neutral. I'm neither excited nor disappointed, but I do still like her as a character! And it is at least appropriate for Animal Crossing to be represented by an actual animal.

I think one of the surprising elements is her moveset. While she does share a few techniques with the Villager she isn't an Echo Fighter, but most of her abilities (as far as I'm aware) are standard AC tasks and could just as easily have been Villager moves...right? Is Isabelle actually associated with fishing more than the player avatar? Maybe somebody can clue me in on that.

I had assumed that the Villager's inclusion was to represent the AC series as a whole so there was no real scope for another character in the series. But, as previously stated, Isabelle is extremely popular and has somewhat become the face of the series so I guess they felt she could be shoehorned in there, but as a bit of a "Villager 2" if you will.

But that's fine by me. There seems to be a concerted effort to bulk up the under-represented franchises this time around and I'm for that, and since Animal Crossing is a pretty big series now I think it's fair to see a second fighter from it (though I think I still would have slightly preferred Mr. Resetti.)

Isabelle being reintroduced as a fighter was a pretty big surprise for me, mainly because of how much I expected her to just be an Echo Fighter. When she showed up, I was thrown off expecting a new AC, than I got thrown off revealing that she was not only returning but as her own fighter, and I got thrown off AGAIN when it was revealed that there WAS a new AC coming. It was a rollercoaster of emotions XD

I always thought that Isabelle was more of a pacifist, but I do appreciate that she's at least not too aggressive with her attacks, which look more like her cheerily getting work done. It also seems appropriate that her moves generally focus more on zoning, whereas Villager's typically encourages close combat (such as how the former plants a Lloyd as a trap, and the latter can ride Lloyd towards opponents)

Looks like their reveal scheme worked perfectly on you!

Well the Villager isn't too aggressive either but they managed to pull Isabelle back even further. I look forward to trying her out!

The player character is only as aggressive as you want them to be, which still isn't very aggressive by AC standards. Isabelle is more of a surprise though because she actively says in New Leaf that she hates confrontation. But then she's also practically your character's wife in the game, so I can see her wanting to do all she can to help and protect her loved one.

While I am happy AC fans got to finally have Isabelle playable in Smash...I really knew this was coming. Now, while a theory that Mii Costume characters eventually being put into Smash may not exactly 100% pan out (in the case of Lloyd, Heihachi, Black Knight, Gilgamesh, Protoman, or Akira and Jacky), I still feel like at least one of those choices maybe included alongside with Isabelle, would have made for a more interesting reaction than either "Oh, she's in," or "WHAT?! SHE'S IN OVER SOMEONE ELSE I CARE ABOUT? WAAAAUGH!!"

And in my opinion, the Nintendo Direct ended a bit poorly, I think. I know they did it to let AC fans know AC 2019 is happening, but I feel there could have been something better to end it with. I see AC as something you feature in the middle of the Direct. Not the beginning or end. Second, as I said, I knew she was coming. I really want some surprises out of the Smash Roster, and I mean surprises. Simon and Richter were surprises. Daisy and Ridley were surprises. Rathalos, Knuckles, and Krystal are also pretty big surprises and no doubt, heavily requested. I cannot really call Isabelle a surprise on that level because:

1. Mii Costume
2. Assist Trophy (like Little Mac)
3. Animal Crossing is decently popular so I did expect her to join Villager at some point.
4. Has been in Brawl before.

Still, I won't deny her popularity. And I see that they are looking to beef up underused franchises. Then, I certainly strongly expect a F-Zero rep in that case.

I'm not one of those that feel angry or disappointed that she's in. I just didn't feel much of anything. Again though, I say this as I am happy AC fans got a new rep as well as a new game.

Well I'm afraid this is a theme that's always going to come up in these things.

There has been a huge vocal demand for a new Animal Crossing so I'm sure many of the fans of that series would argue that it is a good way to end a Direct and I'm sure there are many who are also very pleased to see Isabelle show up in Smash.

I mostly feel sorry for the game developers, it seems like no matter what they do it's just a constant barrage of criticism because people didn't get exactly what they want.

Honestly, Isabelle just felt like a weak inclusion to me and the only reason I feel she was included was due to her popularity rather than being an interesting fighter.
She's the only Assist character-turned Fighter that could revert back to being an Assist and I could care less.

I'll give her credit that she does have a few attributes that distinguishes her from Villager (Most notably the fishing rod, as well as the party popper and the hammer), but I think that Villager could've easily had those moves rather than some of the made up moves for them (Balloon Trip or Lloid Rocket, bowling ball, and boxing gloves, respectively).
Really, Animal Crossing is a franchise that was already represented well enough by just one character, so adding in another character just felt...redundant, for lack of a better word. (Xenoblade is the only 1st-party franchise introduced in Smash 4 that deserves a second rep, IMO)

Though if I was forced to pick another character to represent Animal Crossing, I would probably pick Tom Nook.
I think the only major aspect of Animal Crossing that hasn't been represented enough is furniture, and the stuff Tom Nook sells at his various stores...can make quite an interesting moveset. (The dude can sell ARCHERY BOWS and SWORDS. Granted, they're only for decoration in your home, but still)

Well now that's quite interesting! I think if they could come up with a moveset involving furniture it would be really unique!

As I said, Isabelle does seem like a bit of a "Villager 2" and less representative of herself but I guess they're got to promote those big franchises somehow and I do think she's rather fun.

Uh, no actually--she is NOT more associated with fishing than the player is. I don't even think she participates in the Fishing Tourneys.... I was surprised that Villager didn't have anything involving the fishing rod and I kind of think Isabelle and Villager should switch side specials. Though then Isabelle would need a different down special. Maybe they could be fireworks? That way the move wouldn't have to change much at all.

I like Isabelle but nowhere near as much as everyone else. I'm not against her inclusion; she looks pretty fun to play as honestly. But I definitely would have preferred Tom Nook or K.K. Slider. I didn't think about Mr. Resetti, but I might like playing as him more. I am not certain...

I suppose since most of the AC related battle tactics are not character specific, they could be applied to any character and I guess Isabelle is just the most popular.

I suppose that is true, but I still feel like the fishing rod should have been part of Villager's moveset over Isabelle's

And yep, Isabelle is definitely the most popular.

Dude, I would kill to see Mr. Resetti beat people with his pickaxe.

Seems obvious, right? He's a pretty rough and tumble guy (as far as I know.)

I'd like to see him come back with some kind of significance. At least bring him back as an assist trophy.

For anyone disappointed about Isabelle, don’t worry. Since probably did not take as much work to make than say Belmont or Ridley, I don’t think she’ll take up any space. We’ll still get those characters like Geno, Skull Kid, etc. at least I hope.

Are there really people out there disappointed with Isabelle because they think she takes up space?
I thought we'd got over that by now.

Apparently yeah. The majority are happy for her or are happy for the people who wanted her in the game.

In Happy Home Designer, if you make her a home via one of her amiibos or cards and give her a punching bag, she'll practice with it, gloves and everything.

She can't fight, huh?

I see what you mean, I've seen this character all over this site before. A very cute pose and expression here nonetheless, keep up the nice work.

As a matter of fact I haven't!
I now she's got a few games under her belt so the recognition is there but I've just looked it up and it seems she's not a Nintendo character so not much chance of showing up here!

Oh ok. I always thought she was a Nintendo Character.
