I remember when I was about eleven or twelve years old, I was always starving for some silly yet interesting, animated content. Back when me and my dad used to have a Netflix account, I'd sometimes surf it for something animated to watch. I recall coming across three silly, CG-animated cartoons that I found oddly interesting. First up was Larva. It was a pretty fun and interesting li'l series. I've always loved those stupid, little bugs and their nonsensical misadventures. I still remember that one episode in season two, "Hide & Seek 2," wherein Yellow ends up hiding for so long that Red actually starts to miss him, and they become separated for so many years that they even grow old and sad. God, why did they have to go so fucking HARD with a show about cartoon bugs?! Then there was Oscar's Oasis. Honestly I don't remember Oscar's Oasis as fondly, but I always loved lizards growing up, so it definitely pushed that little button in my brain when I got to see Oscar getting flung around the desert like a sack of potatoes by predators of all shapes and sizes. It actually felt a lot like Larva, but just with desert fauna, but I didn't really watch it as much, so I don't have much to say about it. Finally, there was... Canimals... Now, for those who don't remember Canimals, the name is like a self-explanatory pun. It's basically about these small and silly animals with cans for bodies doing God knows what in real-life environments. As a kid, I definitely appreciated the creativity. I mean, a show about critters with cans for bodies in a real-life environment? A silly, but unique premise, I’ll give ‘em that. Again though, not as many fond memories. I remember a couple characters I like though. I recall a chameleon Canimal and a tortoise Canimal. I actually remember this one short where the tortoise Canimal eats a pepper and starts breathing fire, that was pretty cool. Now you're probably wondering why I bring up these shows and what they have anything to do with today's drawing. Simply put, they gave me some ideas. Also these drawings inspired the designs.

Sock Mongrels is a 2D and live-action hybrid show about these magical creatures known as Sock Mongrels. Like your average pests, such as rats or mice or house hippos, Sock Mongrels like to lurk around your home in search of food, a place to sleep, etc. They're generally harmless creatures, but tend to keep to themselves. Their favourite places to sleep happen to be in laundromats or just anywhere you would expect to find excessive amounts of clean or soon-to-be cleaned clothes because that's where they can blend in the best. If they're ever spotted frollicking among these wonderlands of gloves, socks, shirts, etcetera, they'll immediately transform into the next item of clothing they see so they'll blend seamlessly into their environment. If a Sock Mongrel is more keen on escaping rather than hiding in plain sight, it'll snatch something the humans probably wouldn't miss. Something minor, y'know, like a lone sock or a glove, maybe a tattered Winter hat, or maybe even some lint or whatever leftover crap is lurking in the pockets of an unsuspecting pair of jeans. So next time you ruffle through your laundry and wonder, "Hey, that's funny, I'm missing a sock," then blame the Sock Mongrels. More often than not, Sock Mongrels will use their pilferings as padding or decoration for their nests, which are most often for napping or for keeping their young comfy and warm. Simple stuff like that. Little fun fact, the live-action pairing with 2D schtick was actually inspired by those old Om-Nom shorts, more specifically the ones from season one. God I love those old shorts! <3 Om-Nom Stories: Series 1
