Description
We come across yet another non-mammal synapsid, this time from the Late Triassic in Poland, millions of years after the Permian Extinction. Lisowicia is the largest member of the dicynodonts, a group of herbivorous synapsids that managed to not only survive the Great Dying, but went on to become a major success early on in the Triassic. Like other dicynodonts, Lisowicia is characterized by a toothless beak grouped with a pair of tusk-like projections, and a barrel shaped body. However, this beast is the largest dicynodont ever found, approaching the size and weight of an elephant, and at the time it was alive, it would've been the largest animal on the planet, bigger even than the upcoming sauropodomorph dinosaurs like Plateosaurus.
