The Konik breed is often described as one of Poland's base breeds. "Konik" means "little horse". As the term suggests, the Konik is more horse than pony, even though it rarely exceeds 13 hands. The Konik retains all the hardiness and robust characteristic of its descendant, the Tarpan, but is also has a very quiet temperament and is easily managed. This breed works hard to please and is used by many farmers who consider it a valuable work prospect. Koniks are used under harness and are also used for light draft work, which they are well suited for with a strong body. They boast strong, well-made hind legs, a wide, compact back, and a strong, short neck, and upright shoulders.
