Description This is an image that had been in my head for a while. I purposefully moved away from the horrific and ugly, bloated, marshmallow-looking Transformer art that has become so popular these days (based on the otherwise great work of artist Pat Lee). My Prime is drawn to look more like he did in the original cartoon...you'll notice the lack of excruciating surface detail, to be easily colored. The hands may look small compared to the blocky, chubby, fat-looking "Pat Lee" type Transformer hands that you may be used to, but again, they're drawn to look more like they did in the original animated series (i.e., more smooth, not blocky and jointed). I also drew Optimus with something not usually given to G1 Transformer characters...a robotic looking neck, complete with two pistons that make up his version of sternocleidomastoids, as well as a piece of corrugated tubing running down his throat.
Also, the pose is rather unique...the casual, lounging Prime (yet obviously majestically posing for a picture) is not a Prime we see very often, nor is it a pose that is usually drawn. I hope you enjoy this picture, and I welcome any and all feedback that you may have to offer.

I saw your post on the journal of and followed your link just because of your siggy.

TOS and G1 fan. What a relief.

The G1 art, in my opinion, will always be best. Nice pose here and clean line art. The hands do indeed seem small by comparison, but I love what you did with his neck.

I take it you're a TOS and G1 fan, too?? Excellent!!

Now that I look back on this picture, I can see what everyone was talking about. It's strange how I can't often see the mistakes in my pictures until I haven't looked at them in a while...

G1 the series (art as well) is the best incarnation of the Transformers, plain and simple!!

What do you like about TOS?

I have a soft spot for "brother" stories, so the brotherly interaction between Kirk-Spock-McCoy grabbed me first beyond anything. I grew up watching TNG, and the first TOS thing I saw was TWoK. Talk about trauma. I was only 11, and I knew nothing about the characters except hearsay, but Spock's death scene still ripped me to shreds. It was a decade before I learned they brought him back. In the meantime, I saw one TOS episode on TV: "For the World is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky." I thought it was intriguing.

Years later I learned Spock returned, so I watched all the movies. Then I found TOS on the Sci-Fi channel. My boyfriend at the time told me I wouldn't like it because of the crappy 60s special effects. He failed to factor in the fact I'm a writer. Strong stories and solid acting can overcome old special effects, which really were excellent for their time. I watched and recorded the entire series, read over 100 Pocketbook and Bantam novels, and finally wrote fanfic. The KSM dynamic or novels on their individual lives/histories drew my attention most, although well-done novels on Uhura also fascinated me. In retrospect, I also find it interesting the way TOS incorporates Kennedy-ish politics and provides blatant commentary on social issues of the 60s.

Basically put, I found I like II, IV, and VI best of the movies, and some of my favorite episodes include "For the World is Hollow," "Journey to Babel," "The Enemy Within," "Tomorrow is Yesterday" "Mirror, Mirror," "Assignment Earth," "The Empath" and "City on the Edge of Forever" (even though I know the poor writer hates how they changed his script).

Least favorites: The Motionless Picture and "Spock's Brain."

That's very cool!! I always like hearing other people talk about why they like my favorite show; it gives me interesting insights to it and sometimes points out things that I hadn't noticed before.

I never liked how they changed everything around for the movies, so I don't even consider them to be canon. As far as I'm concerned, the TOS story ended at "Turnabout Intruder," although some of the novels were VERY good. The only TOS episode that I can say I didn't enjoy (and might even go so far as to say something like "I didn't like it at all" or "It was kind of bad") was "The Mark of Gideon." It really dragged on and just was a lackluster episode. All the others, even "Spock's Brain," aren't that bad - it's the best show ever produced in all of history.

Yes, it is interesting to see why others like TOS--especially fans who didn't see it in the 60s on first run.

Well, the thing that bothered me about "Spock's Brain" was that Dr. Coy pointed out earlier in the series that even with all their technology, doctors still knew comparatively little about the human brain, then all of a sudden he's wiring Spock's brain back in like it's nothing.

Promus-Kaa In reply to Ariel-D [2009-01-08 20:44:47 +0000 UTC]

Respectfully though...didn't you see the episode? McCoy DIDN'T know how to reattach Spock's brain. Starfleet medical knowledge didn't know how to do it either. That's why he used "The Teacher," that spikey hair-dryer thing through which he was able to "learn" (albeit temporarily) from highly advanced ancient knowledge.

I only watched it once. 10 years ago. I vaguely remember the teacher, but what I remember more was that the writing felt forced and the storyline implausible even for SF. Even the theme was . . . let's just say it didn't hold up to literary criticism well. I realize the show was progressive for its time, but I was/am occasionally stunned by the blatant sexism espoused as mere scientific fact or normative in a few of the episodes, the worst offender of which is actually "Turnabout Intruder," ironically enough. (TNG's main casting also failed on this count, especially after TY was killed off.)

That's all right, though. Different people like or hate difference episodes for different reasons. What "flies" with some story-wise will flop with others, and not everyone has the same pet peeves.

Promus-Kaa In reply to Ariel-D [2009-01-08 23:11:15 +0000 UTC]

That's the thing with TOS, though; remembering them in retrospect, they always seem kind of dull or boring. Sometimes I'll sit down and watch an episode I haven't seen in years, thinking that it will be as dumb as I might remember.

And then I'm completely blown away by it!! Every time I watch a TOS episode I notice things that I never saw before - all the little details and embellishments that they painstakingly put into the episodes. Sometimes entire scenes seem brand new - the characters, the acting, the situations...it's incredible.

So if it's been TEN YEARS since you saw "Spock's Brain," and if you only saw it once at that...I think it's time you watched it again, if for no other reason than to be better qualified to talk about it.

Don't make me sound senile, my friend.

I can rewatch the episode, sure. But be forewarned that as I grow older, I tend to become more critical of the plot strength, not less. Likewise, the further I am into a fandom, the more critical I become. I may, in fact, find the episode to be worse than I remember instead of better. But on the chance I could like it better, I'll watch it again.

Also keep in mind we are focused on different aspects--you're in film, and I'm in English/writing. Things that you would notice, appreciate, and see value in are not the same as things I can notice, appreciate, and see value in. Some nuance in the writing could improve my opinion of a film or episode, but in the same film, a nuance in the angle, props, or even post production touches could turn your stomach. It's not that I have zero appreciate for the elements associated with film, and some of the more brilliant TOS episdoes made an impression on me because of revolutionary ideas in that area. However, in the end, our main focuses are not the same, and therefore our value systems will not totally align. Hence my remark that I can be shallow about special effects, but at the same time, I can overcome that tendency with ease when presented with good writing and solid acting.

I don't mean to make you sound senile, I'm just saying that if you've only seen something ONCE, and it was an entire decade ago...you might want to watch it again, because you might as well have not seen it at all.

Just enjoy the episode and remember to keep and open mind AND, most importantly, to let your imagination run free!! It's always more fun that way.

Thanks!! I did want to go for a more "flexible" look like you mentioned, so I'm happy that you were able to pick up on that feature!! Of course I'm a huge G1 Purist, so I wanted to stick to the design of the original Optimus Prime, but add a few little subtle differences to "pimp it up" a bit.
