Description Okay, so this was meant to just be a sweet drawing of Ramona and her chinchilla, Mabel - I mentioned that she has one in a few journals, but haven't spoken about her much. However, its backstory got kinda sad kinda fast, so take this as an advanced warning.

Mabel was a birthday gift from Michelle when Ramona turned 38; the year of the fiasco with Camille - i.e. getting shot, and subsequently almost sacked - which was evidently a pretty shitey year. She's the only one of their animals who isn't a family pet; she is considered to be exclusively Ramona's, as chinchillas are pretty high-maintenance, and nobody else has much knowledge of them (Ramona had one when she was a kid that she had to give away when she moved to the UK, which was named Muffy.) Ramona absolutely loved her to bits - she claimed otherwise, but out of the dogs and cats, Bel was probably her favourite pet; she was basically another child. However, then China happened, and she was away from home for the best part of a year and a half.

The scene depicted is Mona and Mabel seeing each other for the first time after she came home - hence the scars, crutches, and how short her hair is. They were both happy as hell to see each other again. But then Ramona's AIDS and subsequent cancer caused her to get sicker, and forced her to spend more and more time away from home in the hospital. Jed got kicked out on several occasions for trying to sneak Mabel into her room in a backpack - much like her owner, Mabel pretty much had an inability to sit still for any considerable length of time, so it wasn't difficult for the hospital staff to catch Jed, what with him having a squirming bag and all.

Mabel was with her, along with Michelle and her kids, when she died at home, 8 years after her release. After about six months when she worked out that Ramona wasn't coming back, Mabel herself started getting ill. Chins can actually die from depression - they stop eating, drinking, and sleeping until the exhaustion, starvation, thirst, or organ failure eventually kills them - and this is exactly what happened to Bel. She just gave up one day, and was put to sleep after going into renal failure. Michelle had her cremated, and scattered her ashes over Mona's grave.

So damned cute! Chins are just darling, and there's just nothing like their fur for petting... her end was very tragic though, but realistic. I know dogs can get extremely melancholy when a pack member (two or four legged) dies, but I think a lot of people underestimate how attached rodents can get to their people.

I love that Jed tried to get her into the hospital to see his mom. It may be a serious breach of protocol and pretty inconvenient for the staff, but it shows how dedicated he was to making his mother and her Bel happy.

Thank you! Oh god, I know - they're like petting a damn cloud Yeah, it happens with a lot of animals...On the other end of the spectrum, however, there's cats. When they rest their heads on you while you're sleeping, they're not being affectionate; they check to see whether or not you're dead so that they know if they can start eating you

Jed: To be honest, they tried to ban me the first couple of times, but once she started getting really sick they stopped giving a shit. It wasn't like she was going through chemo or anything, so particularly susceptible to germs, and chinnies are generally pretty good at personal hygiene. She really did make the bad days a lot easier for Mum, and us as well - it felt good to see her happy, and it meant that a lot of Cal and I's last memories with her are fairly good ones. It did bring me a sort of comfort after they both died, even if I missed them both - knowing that Bel was up there with her; knowing that she wasn't alone...it made it a little easier to find some happiness in the grief.

You're welcome.
Hehehe, that's cats for you. Although I have met and heard of cats that act more like dogs, but usually only to one person.

Heart-breaking yet uplifting at the same time.
