The battlefield grew silent. All eyes were now upon the angel.
Standing tall and resplendent, with a corona of blinding white light obscuring its divine face, the massive creature awed all who bore witness to its presence. In one hand it carried a staff of gold, and in the other a glorious golden blade.
The people fell to their knees, rejoicing. "Finally," said they, "Our savior has come to deliver us!" The people began to dance and sing, certain that salvation was at hand. The angel looked upon this display in silence. It raised its golden staff and, in a flash of searing light, a thousand were struck dead.
The people screamed and fled, confused and crestfallen at this betrayal.
"Why?" they pleaded, "Why do you punish us?"
The angel remained silent and continued to cleanse the field of life. Those that fled were destroyed. Those that did not flee threw themselves upon the angel's divine mercy, only to discover to their horror that there was none.
When the field was finally barren of any that lived, the angel turned its gaze north, to the city in the distance. It set forth as it's brothers descended from the heavens.
The Day of Wrath had come, and its work was just beginning...
