About Gene, that was exactly I thought.
I imagine that he tells Sam the truth, however Sam doesn't believe in it, laughing and thinking that Gene was teasing him, again. But Gene doesn't laugh, neither say something else. That makes Sam's heart break, and he realises Gene isn't joking. Then Sam cries. And you pointed out about Gene's look: "I know you want to stay but you can't". Finally Gene just says: "Time to go to the Railway Arms, Dorothy."
Second part of this artwork will be Gene and Sam sharing the bed, making love.
