to quote the New York Performance Script (which i have a copy of, signed by the OBC, Joe Mantello, and Stephen Schwartz, booyah!)
(The guards bang on the locked door)
Guard: Open this door, in the name of his supreme Ozness!
Elphaba: Ah may a tay a tum ditum...
Glinda: (as Elphaba continues chanting) What are you doing? Stop it! That-That's what started all this in the first place...that hideous levitation spell!...STOP!!!
(Elphaba stops chanting)
Glinda: Well...Where are your wings? Maybe you're not as powerful as you think you are...
(A broomstick floats across the room toward Elphaba)
Elphaba: I told you, Glinda...I did it, I tell you!

-stares- I loved that book, but the converstion to the musical sounds confuseing. Defying gravity was when her and Glinda went to see the wizard after their head master at Shiz told them about the adpet thing and after Dr. Dilliman, right? But in the book she didn't have the grimmerie then... hmmm
But that doesn't really have anything to do with this, does it MJP n_n; sorry. Once again, I love it!

In the musical, if I remember correctly, the Wizard gives her the Grimmerie when they go to visit him because he isn't magical and isn't able to cast any of the spells. This is where she trys one out and gives the monkeys wings. When she learns that the Wizard is the one who is hurting the animals, she runs out of his room and refuses to work with him. This is where 'Defying Gravity' pretty much starts.
I guess it's kinda similar to the book in that the Grimmerie did originally belong to the Wizard. They had to really simplify the book and change lots of things so it converted well to the stage.

Yeah, I figured. I read somewhere (I guess when I was looking for tickets) that it's only based on the book, not a real reflection of it.
