Description

(Pelikan P458 Airpen - A ..... De Atramentis Document White, Pelikan 100N - EF ..... Platinum Carbon black)

This is my input for the June Challange of the Inkblot-Splatter group.

Goal was to draw stationary from life using ink.

Details about the challange can be found at:

I've drawn one of my favorite fountain pens.

It is a Montblanc 144 Celluloid Masterpiece with a double broad nib from the 1950s.

These pens are awesome writers made from Celluloid and come with semiflex nibs.

It also has the legendary telescopic piston mechanism, a masterpiece of mechanical engineering which can only found at Montblanc Masterpieces from the 1950s.

The telescopic piston was expensive and difficult to manufacture but it allows a much greater ink capacity than normal piston fillers with a conventional rod.

Later pens don't have this goodie anymore, only the 1950s series.

If you are interested how the telescopic piston is working then Google it, there are some good schematics online.

This specific pen I bought quite some years ago at an online auction.

It had almost no description, only: "old fountain pen, not functional" and one blurry picture which did not show much.

I had a gut feeling that from the form and the nib shape it might be one of the famous 50s Montblanc, but I had no proof and did not knew how badly it is damaged or it is even complete.

So I gambled and bid on it, but also others seem to have the same gut feeling.

Finally I succeeded, I don't know how much I paid anymore, I think between 400 and 500 Euros, a lot of money for a pen which might be only crap.

When it arrived I was more than happy, it was indeed a 50s Montblanc 144 (unfortunately not a 146 but much better than a 142).

It had a crack in the cap but somebody repaired it professionally and it was covered in decades of old dried ink.

But the nib seems undamaged and it was an authentic and rare BB (double broad) one.

The pen obviously needed some love and a complete service.

I disassambled the pen completely (which is not easy as some of you might know) but it was an interesting project and I definitely learned something from it.

And despite it was completly full of dried ink, it was complete and not damaged, even the original seal was intact (which I did not expected).

When I was finished I had a wonderful 50s Montblanc Masterpiece in fully functional condition.

And I bought it at a price which I would never be able to aquire it when it was described properly.

That day I was the Sumguy.

The prices at that point of time were already crazy for the 50s Masterpieces but since then they even got much more expensive.

I also have a 50s 142 in my collection (unfortunately only with a KM (Kugel Medium) nib) but I still miss a 50s 146.

But I most likely I will never own a 50s 146 as I'm not willing to pay way more than 1000€ for a decent one.

But when somebody would ask me which pen I still would like to own then my answer would be a 50s 146 beside an older and even more expensive 139.
