This praying mantid was hiding out on our porch during a rain storm. I manage to coax him onto my hand and got rewarded with this neat pose, he probably thought I was some ugly monster with a flashing eye trying to eat him though
And people say Friday the 13th is bad luck...

So cool! I love praying mantises...from a reasonable distance.
I was recording one yesterday on my camera and it started flying towards me, maybe out of curiosity, but I thought that I had threaten it and ran away. 
Don't they shot acid/sting/bite you if they feel threatened? What did it do afterwards?

Ah sweet, actually they aren't dangerous but some of the larger ones put on a threat display by fanning their wings and spreading their forelegs. It's basically the insect version of "Come at me Bro!"
