Description ...Shub-Niggurath, the Black Goat of the Woods, and her Thousand Young...

One of Lovecraft's most enigmatic creations, alternately seen as male and female, symbol of fertility to some interperetations.

In my own interperetation, neither male nor female, able to "breed" with humans only by tearing them open and laying its eggs in their still-warm bodies.

I got tired of drawing HPL-inspired tentacle-monsters, so I went for a more arthropod/arachnid/mantis/xenomorph look. As for the "goat" business, well, it's got horns, anyhow.

Pencil -> Pen -> Photoshop, more hours than I care to remember.

I like how she looks distinctively female, despite not being human.

Hoho! That sure is a scary, scary beastie, and a good idea of how the Dark Goat might look. I never really saw Shub-Niggurath as looking like anything... well, mammalian, and this is a really cool take on the "goat" business. The trees add a lot to the scary factor as well, they look very creepy.

Thanks! I guess there are some better descriptions of her(?) in some non HPL sources- "Notebook Found in a Deserted House" by Robert Bloch I'm pretty sure has one -where she's (I'm just going to go with "she") described as a vaguely amorphous ball of a thing with dangling thin tentacle-legs that end in hooves, but I'd already drawn my take on a shoggoth so I wasn't keen to rehash the whole amorphous ball of a thing bit.
I've always liked creepy deciduous trees. Probably comes of growing up with nothing but palm trees as far as the eye can see.

Again it's a great piece. My question is, do you have another version of the picture with a full display of the body at the bottom or is this the only one?

Thanks, glad you like it.

Naw, I deliberately drew her mostly off screen so I wouldn't have to label it as mature content. The inked version in my scraps is the very image of the original I keep in my portfolio. Sorry.

hey, big bro! ^^
I love this picture, it's so ominous, I love how the legs look like the trees. This came out to be particularly eerie. Also like how subtle and insignificant you made the human sacrafice look, very Lovecraftian indeed. I feel kind of addictided to some of the stuff you draw, it amazes me what you can do with ink, taking it into potoshop only astounds me even more. Keep up the good work! ^o^

Isn't that just the queen from the Aliens movies?

Good tag, yeah, she definitely informed my mental image of what this monster should look like (hence the "xenomorph" listed under inspirations). As I recall, she had far fewer legs, no crab legs at all, no horns, and also no mantis attack legs. I might be mistaken, it's been a bit since I've seen Aliens.

You're most welcome. It definetly has a Lovecraftian feel to it.
