Growing up, Mateo had to struggle for everything. Nothing came easy when you were growing up dirt poor in Mexico City. Mateo never the less managed to stay on the straight and mostly narrow. He didn’t get sucked into working as a runner, and eventually as a sicario, for one cartel or another. Nor did he wind up addicted to drugs. Mateo made his living by looking through the dumps and trash piles of Mexico City, searching for aluminum or other valuables to strip and sell for a quick buck. It was there that he found the statue.

It was a weird little thing—a tiny emerald green snake, with some sort of wings, extending out from the side. Mateo had never really studied any sort of history, so he had no idea the statue was supposed to represent Quetzalcoatl, an Aztec deity....and it was said to have magical, wish granting powers.

Mateo left the statue on his dresser for a while, meaning to sell it but never actually getting around to doing so. It was finally, after another long day of hunting for junk—valuable junk, but junk—that Mateo decided to bring it to his pawnshop owner friend to sell. As he carried out, he grumbled “I wish I was on Easy Street like I thought I’d be by now!”

To his shock, the statue’s eyes flashed red, and then began to glow. Mateo felt the world start to spin around him, and then—a brilliant flash of light.

Sofia sighed as she posed for the picture. As the stunningly beautiful youngest daughter of one of Mexico City’s richest men, she certainly was on Easy Street. Clothes, jewelry, cars, shoes; whatever Sofia wanted, she got. The adjustment to being a future trophy wife was a big one, but Sofia has handled it smoothly. After all, the statue had vanished, so there wasn’t a way to turn back into Mateo. And hey, at least now she was on easy street after all.
