This is exactly what I did on my first independent Vegas, without House.

I never liked the General. He was a wuss when I was playing the Legion's side. He just laid down a bunch of traps and ran off while some of the NCR soldiers fought me. I found him dead later due to crossfire. Heh...at least Lanius fights you head on.
