another really nice one, you are very good at drawing nature, really like your forest drawings, they have lovely values and a good control of focus

and thanks again. I thought this one would be relatively simple, all that greenery.
it turned out all that greenery about blinded me in the end...

you know those last 3 pieces if I could fav them again I would, each time I see them they blow me away. I have no doubt it was a killer doing all that detail, worked out great in the end

You are uncommonly sweet here, Jonathon.
Thank you.

You've got a nice stroke... seems like an old fairy tale drawing from the 19th century.

I like this one very much. Makes me miss my dogs and walks. Dogs are so sweet and patient. Or can be. I prefer larger calmer breeds. No more cute little yappy terriers for me.

Wow, what amazing detail. The vegetation is wonderfully done. I always find that the hardest when I've tried to draw.

Thank you, Laura! I seriously thought the vegetation would be a no-brainer but I was misled...getting depth and dimension and perspective without feeling compelled to draw every leaf, ugh.
I'm glad you like it!

That's where I've always run into problems with my pastels. I am such a detail person, that I've never quite gotten the hang of drawing nature with all it's detail and dimension (ironically it seems to be all I photograph...lol). I love doing pastels of people. That's all about light and shadow. I truly admire how well you captured the woods in this drawing as well as the dogs.

Well I thank you. I used to avoid natural settings and landscapes but once I took them on I found they can be very settling. Sometimes. I try not to get too caught up in every line and shadow, I'm not looking to create photo-realistic work, just an appealing presentation. But it's hard if you are detail oriented not to get sucked in. Your photographs are lovely.
I am color-phobic, it's amazing and arcane to me what people can create with pastels.

Thank you, you really are too kind, but it's very nice to hear. I hate to sound like an old fuddy-duddy school teacher but drawing really is a skill that improves with practice, our art professors in college always emphasized that. So keep drawing! I'd love to see your pastels sometime.

My teacher in a drawing class said the same about practice. She told us to carry a little sketch book around and just do quick sketches and that alone would help. I didn't listen though.

Why is that? I know that I find it easier to draw from another drawing, painting, or photo. Though some of my 1980 flowers had no subject. Some of my cats, as well. Tried to draw one of my Siamese from life when he was asleep, but he kept waking up and moving, and each time I'd try to repose him, he'd glare at me, and turn around... or up and leave... and that drawing would never go any further. lol

Hello, MeRQuR, thanks very much for your comment. This was drawn on 9"x12" vellum Bristol. It has a little more texture than I am used to, most of my work is done on plate or smooth finish.

No wonder the picture of my dog caught your eye! You did a wonderful job of rendering this. I love how you managed to capture the shadows on the fur without losing detail.

Yes, I figured. It's good, I'm sure being so busy keeps you out of trouble.
But you're young to be teetering on the brink of burn-out.

the thing is though, theatre isn't burning me out, theatre is more of my escape. School sucks right now.
theatre problems normally have ways to fix them. Like if a cable doesn't work, well, re wire it. But if I have a paper I don't know what to write about, well....
