Description Hagoromo - Cloak of Feathers

This piece is based on a traditional Japanese tale which has been immortalized in the Noh style of theatre. In the story, a fisherman finds a beautiful cloak of feathers lying in a tree. Intrigued, he decides to keep the trange cloak. Just as he is about to take it a beautiful woman appears. She pleads with him to give the cloak of feathers back to her because she is an angel and without the cloak she will be unable to return to the heavens. Eventually the fisherman returns her cloak and in thanks she puts it on and dances for him.

Hagoromo is essentially a vehicle of the angels and immortals. It is what allows them to travel between the heavenly realm and the earthly realm.

Now, you may wonder why the dancer's eyebrows seem to high up on her forehead. I assure you this is not an accident. To the Japanese high eyebrows were considered a mark of nobility. So a long time ago it was common for women to shave off their real eyebrows and paint new ones on halfway up their foreheads. I like to call these sky-brows.

The dancer's pose is based on this photo of myself in one of my vintage kimono: [link]

Prints of this piece are currently up for sale in my Etsy shop: [link]

I love seeing different cultural takes on angels. While i still find the western image of angels beautiful it can get a bit stale sometimes. Wonderful job.
