I love this picture. Zippy little rides, so they say. Looks like it'd be a blast to drive

very, very quick. lotus quick: light weight instead of high power. They are truly a car meant for a race track.

Ah, cool. Strange that Ive never seen one. Old classics are better than new ones, new cars have got no soul, no personality. Good to see these old ones still running!

The bulge would suggest a four-stroke, yes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

qmorley In reply to dan820 [2007-12-17 08:33:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes, although the 2-stroke sonetts (250 made) have a bulge, this larger bulge indicates it has the v4 4 stroke engine. The 2-strokes would be a 3 cylinder. We found one for sale once that was a 2 stroke and the guy cut the hood all up and threw a v4 in it! travesty.

Wow, nice shot! And great car ! I've never seen this car, do you know some specs please? (i.e. power, weight, and what kind of wheel drive it is)

qmorley In reply to Azrail-Berny88 [2007-12-17 08:31:47 +0000 UTC]

1700cc ford german built v4 engine, most people have their cars between 70-100 hp, a couple saab racer guys have got up to 150 hp, with one guy getting 175 hp. 1700 lbs with gas in it. front wheel drive.

Yeah, panning at 1/10 sec exposure will give you a nice blur!

They are really small, when you see them in real life.

I took some photos of a Sonett at the New Hope car show. Would you like me to post them??

qmorley In reply to 426maxwedgie [2007-09-19 05:09:00 +0000 UTC]

Throw one up in scraps if you want. I think a lot of your watchers might like to see one though.. they are very unusual and if people see them usually they walk away confused.

I personally don't like Sonetts. I rode with dad in his to a car club meet in seattle on sunday and my neck is still crooked to the left. Things are tiny! And I'm 6' 8"

They are beautiful cars though and a piece of history. I just hope my dad leaves them to my sister! haha

I'll put it in my deviations. I actually like them. It's not a car you'd expect from Saab.

Hey now, what are you trying to say!

Saab's have always been a 'drivers' car.

Unlike Volvo.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

426maxwedgie In reply to qmorley [2007-09-20 10:56:10 +0000 UTC]

Saab and Volvo haven't really made any interesting NEW cars, so when I found out about the Sonett and the P1800, I was surprised.

I own a Volvo.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

qmorley In reply to 426maxwedgie [2007-09-20 19:45:20 +0000 UTC]

Haha. What kind of Volvo do you own?

So 260 HP out of a 2.3 liter 4 cylinder turbo as a stock power output isn't interesting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

426maxwedgie In reply to qmorley [2007-09-20 19:48:01 +0000 UTC]

A 1993 240. Last year they made them.

No, I'm not saying that, but look at the P1800 and the Sonett compared to the rest of the cars form the companies. They are the cars that stick out because they look so different from what you usually expect.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

qmorley In reply to 426maxwedgie [2007-09-20 19:56:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I suppose. Most car companies have a sports car, though. Ever heard of the honda S600? [link]

Saab is talking about bringing back the Sonett. I think its retarted for Saab to name the SUV the 9-7, because the Sonett was a model 97 on the paper work. Saab is heading too much towards science fiction for my taste though

426maxwedgie In reply to qmorley [2007-09-20 20:04:34 +0000 UTC]

I know about the Honda S600. It's in Gran Turismo 4. I know that most companies have sports cars.

That would be cool if they bring it back, but they'd probably just make in another body for one for their current chassis.

qmorley In reply to 426maxwedgie [2007-09-21 07:41:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. It's as sporty as they get now though. Wikipedia has info on the Sonett concept if you read their article about sonetts. I guess they are still considering it. Problem is they want a FWD 2 seater, and all the platforms for 2 seaters are RWD.

The first couple hundred they made didn't have that hood bulge and had a three cylinder two stroke engine.
