I've been wanting to read more about the history and life of Malcolm X. They really never touched on him in school and the things I find out about him are actually quite interesting.

Wonderful work.
Malcolm was one of the few true heroes American has produced.

I thought Martin Luther King was the nice one, and Malcom X used violence and was not very good.

Complex. I will answer that.
Luther King was non-violent and pacifist,
Malcom X was no agressor, but he believed early that an oppressed people should stand up and have the right to use violence if uneascapable, basicaluy.
Note; On one, non-violence and pacifism dont mean a weak, non-action - you have still the violence of words and of pacific but firm opposition, and both figures started to come closer ideologicaly and philosophicaly on some points, on both sides.

hoodlum..turned political activist..and eventually betrayed by his "mentor"
amazing historical figure ..he and Martin Luther King fed off each other for the benefit of an entire race of people..what more can be said

He admited aftre the Hadj(?) he was wrong on quite some subjects - he saw how humans can be egal, before God and the law. All brothers.
The NOI sure didnt like to see this, as he became an orthodoxe SUnni muslim.

i know his history.
If only he hadn't been such a loyal servant to NOI in the beginning he might have been seen in a better light historically.
Amazing strength of courage to go from street hoodlum to international statesman al the same.

He took some quite time to open his eyes on things like the prophet's hypocrisy..
Then, it was the USA before the Civil Rights kicked in for blacks, and an ideology of being proud of be black and all, and say 'f**** you' to The Man...
Such angryness was understandable, when we saw how the story of those decades went....

sure..it's difficult to judge in retrospect..can understand where his anger cam from..pity he was "sold out" by his mentor.

Personaly, I am sure the NOI had an hand on his death, clearly; they lost face when he 'apostasied'. Now, if this was alone or.. we may never know.

sure they did..whether it was organised by the leader or a breakaway group..they were certainly involved..
i think the world missed out on what would have been the best years of Malcom X's life

Indeeed. A world where he or King lived - and more, both - may have been different for everyone, and at least interesting to watch, to say the least...
maybe they would have ended into some sort of alliance..

at the end they kind of had an unwritten pact..unfortunately they never got the chance to work together.

There is a new Malcom X biography, maybe its what you meaned, albeit there is controversy on it;
on the Total War big fans forum, some conversative fool praised it for 'trashing the hoodlum's saintly image', along also a recent(?) Ghandi one.
