Description
Eothurgy
is the form of magic residing upon planet
Witleos,
a planet revolving around the star
Omnecron.
It first appeared on Witleos after an eruption of light filled the skies worldwide. The core of the planet was transformed into a reservoir of magic known as the
Altharmus.
It is from the Altharmus that the power of magic comes.
Eothurgy is centered around the idea of novelty. When two mages create a magical ability, they both draw upon the same portion of the Altharmus, thus destabilizing and weakening it. Therefore, if two mages attempt to create the same ability, their power is halved (the power is divided by the number of people trying to create it). Due to this, mages grew resentful that their hard work in creating new abilities was being diluted into nothingness. Thus, a new system emerged: the Magistrate system.
The original mages, called
Magistrates,
had a deeper link with the Altharmus than anyone else and could dictate power distribution. They decided that each ability may only be created by one mage and all abilities must be registered with the Magistrate Council. The Magistrates are guided by the
Seven Decrees
: they must judge each ability with fairness, give protection to creators' rights, be adaptable to the situation, follow the laws they've established, promote the progression of magic, foresee implications of each registration, and be willing to enact changes with the wisdom they've gathered.
Eothurgic abilities work like this:
A mage must first decide how their ability works. They imagine all the workings of their abilities and transmit a bit of their life force or
vitality
into pieces of glass. For example, they might imagine being able to absorb, manipulate, and control the state of water (their ability would be water control). Their vitality carries their will into the glass.
The mage then gives the glass piece to the Magistrate Council. The Council observes the ability through the glass and determines if it is novel enough to count as a new ability. If no, then that ability is not registered. If it is, then it is registered, the glass piece is sent into the Altharmus, and that mage (or creator) gets the exclusive power to distribute that ability.
Each Eothurgic ability is tied to a different
keystone.
The keystone is any physical thing (eg. symbol, chemical element, etc) that represents the created ability. To use an Eothurgic ability, one must get permission from the mage that created it. They then give the creator what (s)he wants in exchange for it. After getting permission, the mage then uses their willpower to seep vitality into the keystone and draw out the power inside.
THE STORY OF MORNEVELT MYTHORIA IX:
The Magistrate system gets around the dilution of power. Since only one mage creates one ability, it avoids destabilizing the Altharmus portion. The keystones allow each mage to harmoniously tap into the same portion instead of fighting over it during its conception. Thus, the keystones allow multiple mages to draw upon an ability without diluting power and the creators get compensation for their work. It seemed like a win-win scenario.
Nonetheless, many issues remain. What counts as suitable compensation for getting permission? How novel does an ability need to be to be considered new? How do you get around the subjective nature of judging? Should keystone distributions be regulated too? How do you prevent corruption amongst the Magistrates? Which new Magistrates should receive the powers of the old when the old near death's door? These issues eventually led to Witleos collapsing into a violent world where alliances and betrayals were commonplace and many factions fight to gain power. The story of Mornevelt Mythoria IX then follows how each protagonist deals with the horrid climate of their world and how they might bring a better future.
