Description
Envisioned in the 1960s, concepted in 1975, mocked-up in 1979 and built as a prototype in 1982; then built in full production from 1988 onwards.
The D Class 4-6-0 was one of the newest modern steam locomotives to be built; as it was built to be a mix-traffic locomotive as well as a regional express locomotive.
The design of the D Class combines various other locomotive design together to create it; it had an LMS-esqe shillouette to it, ran with Gresley valve gear and had an enclosed 2+2 windowed cab of unqiue design. The locomotive was designated D12 during it's prototype testing on the ECML.
The locomotive can be outfitted with smoke deflectors; the smoke deflectors closest to the funnel are of Thompson design from his Pacific rebuilds & new builds; the other set of smoke deflectors are of custom design to provide a sharp gust of wind to push the smoke well clear of the cab.
The D Class was also seen with a yellow ended firebox door; this was to be compliant with BR Regulations.
This locomotive is part of my New Age Alternate History; as well as one of my older designs given a new lease on life.
