Oh goooossssh, I love your fishman design so much. He's absolutely beautiful! I suppose you're swamped right now with your animation project, and this is from years ago, but if you ever have the time and inclination someday to make more fishman drawings, I would be a very happy fan!

Thank you!

Unfortunately the fishman and Baroca both don't have any set world yet, but I'd love to be able to work on them some more in future.

I love this piece, such personality in this meeting (and excellent character design to boot ).

Firstly I am struck by the wonderful story book feel of your illustration, especially apparent in how you handle things like the background, and the emotive quality of your lines. After that I am amazed by the sheer strength of structure in this piece, everything exists in space and that's difficult to achieve, especially in such a complex composition. this is where the character design comes in, both characters have distinct identifying elements that allow them to be oriented freely in space. Take that fin (also along the tail), the raised seams of the skin, the geometric skull, or perhaps the most obvious, the striping of your "Baroca". Very clever.

I think compositionally this piece has a lot of excellent elements, leading lines being first and foremost at the attention. We have the gaze lines following perfectly the line of the diagonal, but then we have the fin and hands creating a counter-curve; these intersect at the meeting point. Elegant.

My only immediate qualm is the use of white. I understand that a harsh lighting scheme was necessary for this piece to work, but I think you've taken it a little too far and neglected some of the opportunities you might have given yourself by controlling it a bit more readily. Yes, they need to be secluded, this interaction has to happen distinctly away from the rest of the action. Rather than make your light harsh through color make it harsh through quality. Pure white inevitably always hurts, it's unnatural. The only time I support it is if it functions as bleed (in which case, again, it is not finally white, it is the tone of the paper). Now, I am a hypocrite in this sense, but I've been making a strong push to move away from using pure whites and blacks. They just aren't found in the natural world, and for a piece with such a strong environmental element this creates an unnecessary discord. I think what I am looking for here is some amber tinged with violet, pull that bright down a bit, filter it for the dappled effect, but keep the intensity of it. This might even allow you to accent the silhouette by providing a nice backlight. Just make sure the duality isn't lost (light character on dark, dark character on light). Now this piece is probably far beyond the point of completion (love those textures) but in future pieces I'd ask you to question the urge to use pure white.

Anyway, a beautiful illustration .

Congratulations on the feature, this is a great piece. I'm coming over from #ProjectComment

Thank you very much for that constructive comment. This was a piece for my drawing class where we were beginning to look at tonal values, which I struggle with a lot, so when my teacher asked for a "dark shade and a light shade" I think I did take it too far with the white. Thanks very much for pointing it out and I'll definitely keep it in mind. Something about the piece was irking me and I think you figured it out.

(Gosh I feel inadequate writing such a short reply!)

An assignment, you say, that clears some things up . The tone balance is definitely a strong element and crucial to the piece (it makes sense that it was the basis of the composition). You are quite welcome.

(Don't worry about it, that's about how long my comment should have been but I have a tendency to go unnecessarily verbose .)

I tend to prefer the constructive comments that can help me get better the next time I undertake something like this, so no worries. Thanks very much for the comment.

Oh no. . . You might want to get Clopin to lick that up for you. Just tell him its Feshi (sp?) and that the earlobe is an erotic spot to nibble on . . . because it is. Always works.
