Description

Note: This profile is constantly being added to. Please excuse any mistakes.

  • Hero Name: Gray Seal
  • Real name: Lorelay O’Leary
  • Nicknames: Seal, Lore, Galaway (insensitive nickname)
  • Age: 24
  • Sex/Gender: Female
  • Orientation: Demisexual
  • Species: Human/selkie hybrid
  • Ethnicity: Irish
  • Nationality: Irish
  • Current residency: Dublin, Ireland

Physical appearance:

  • Eyes: Lorelay’s eyes are a medium, warm brown, coming from her dad.
  • Hair: Lorelay’s hair is very long, down to her waist, and is often in a low ponytail, often with a scrunchy as she is very particular about her hair and hair care, but she is not fond of having it tied back when she is swimming.
  • Build: Lorelay is very lean and fit, but she’s not stick-like. The first impression of her build is “fit."
  • Height: Lorelay is a whopping 5’2”

Powers: Lorelay gets her powers from the “Ribbon of waves.” This gives her the ability to connect with the ocean on a deeper level. Not only does her marine awareness increase, but she now has the ability to manipulate water itself. Her power is not the most powerful ,so she needs to be able to think and be clever about her attacks.

  • Water Manipulation: With the ribbon comes the basic power of water manipulation. She can control water and use it for attacks.
    • Limit: Lorelay can only control so much water at a time. It’s not like she can carry the Pacific or hold back an entire warning-level tsunami.
  • Pinniped Communication: Pinnipeds, or seals, are basically family. Silent communication is how it is done. Lorelay may have webbed limbs, but that doesn’t do too much. This is where the seals come in. With the ribbon, she her range expands to different marine life including sharks (her personal favourite), dolphins, turtles, and more. This does not include any mythical life.
  • Healing: She does have the power to heal, but it is very slow, tedious, and energy consuming.

Personality:
Lorelay is very quiet and distant. She likes to be in her own bubble. When she is in trouble, her first instinct is to run away, but she is very work and priority driven and tends to go in first head on. She is very caring about life and ha a difficult time hurting in cold blood. However, contradicting to her private nature, she has an unquenchable thirst for adventure and heroism, but she blames that on her Selkie origins.

Backstory/Origins:

Lorelay’s life as a child was not normal. Her Selkie mother had disappeared soon after she was born, leaving Lorelay to her father. Her father, Sam O’Leary sheltered her as she grew, homeschooling her as her way into education. When she had turned about ten, her webbed hands started to become more apparent, and Sam had Lorelay wear specially designed gloves or mittens when they went out. She felt like a freak, but Sam made it known that her mother was not human, and a Selkie. From a very young age, she knew she was a hybrid of some sort. If Sam had not told her about her origins when he did, their relationship may not have been as solid as it continued to be. When Lorelay became a teen, Sam got a job at Stark Industries as an electrical engineer. Lorelay never met Tony Stark officially, but she had seen him once when he came to visit Ireland. It didn’t help that the press and fans weren’t leaving him alone when he would be on the streets.

One of the main moments of her life growing up was the first time Sam took Lorelay to the beach: Sandmount beach about fifteen minutes away from their residence. Her obsession with the ocean started there as she went into open water, disregarding her father’s orders. Ironically, her favourite animals became sharks.

In her early twenties, in university, Lorelay got in a relationship with a very sweet English man by the name of Derek. While she was in college, she got a call from Arbour Hill Jail and found out her father was being held and waiting to be put on trial. She rushed back home to Dublin and found out that he was being convicted of engineering a machine to control the weather while he was working at Stark industries, which was accused of being a violation of the Environmental Modification Convention. He was sentenced to fifeteen years in prison. However, Sam knew he was framed, and so does Derek and Lorelay. As soon as Lorelay finished university, she moved into a home with Derek and used her time to try and fine the real criminal who was roaming free while her father was taking the punishment. Around this time, Lorelay told Derek about heritage, and this was difficult for Derek to digest, but they continued to stay a happy, stable couple. It startles Derek, though, every time he finds Lorelay laying on the floor of their pool.

Her main story starts on her twenty-fourth birthday she visited Sam, as she does every week, and had lunch together in the prison cafeteria. Lorelay didn’t eat anything, but she was happy. In that time, Sam told Lorelay of a box that hid in one of the crevasses in the pool of her old childhood home. This home was demolished years ago, but the pool was still there, collecting all types of uncleanliness. When she found it, it was a present from her mother: a golden ribbon. This ribbon was knotted in a way that it would wrap twice around a wrist. This ribbon is where her powers come from. However, she needed to discover these powers by herself, because her mother’s note did not explain anything, and Sam was unaware that the box contained this ribbon. She has the capability to change the state of water, teleport through water, embody water, but the most she could do was manipulate it. She learns to change the state later, but that took a lot of time and energy.

Those who were really making the weather machine started to come into light for Lorelay, but they were starting to initiate their plan. When evacuating people out, Lorelay gets her father out. In everyone’s efforts to defeat these criminals and save as many people as possible, Sam is killed, and Derek is injured. At the end of the day, the majority was saved. About a month after, Nick Fury arrives at her house, asking to have a discussion with Lorelay on the Avenger’s initiative.

MCU Appearances:

  • The Avengers: Lorelay joins the Avengers, after a lot of hesitation, and is involved with the attack on New York by Loki and his army. However, when Loki was in that glass cylinder cage thing and Loki invaded her mind and try to bring her down, he connected with her, because she hated her mother with a passion as much as he hated his father. They have a sentimental moment with it, but Lorelay had her priorities straight.
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron: Lorelay is not mentioned until Clint brings the Avengers to his secluded home where his girlfriend and children lived away from dangers. Since S.H.I.E.L.D was down, no one actually knew how to contact her. That is, until Nick Fury contacts her and she is on the first flight over to America.
  • Captain America: Civil War: Lorelay immediately chooses Cap’s side. The American government is trying to take control of her for saving people? For risking her life for the greater good? Hell bloody no! She’s Irish; not American! She did have a moment of hesitation, because Natasha Romanoff was on Tony’s side, but she, again, had her priorities straight. She gets injured during the airport fight, because she had limited arsenal, but is delighted when Natasha switches over.
  • Thor Ragnarok: Lorelay is really not in here. She is mentioned, like, once.
  • Spiderman: Homecoming: Again, not actually here. She is just heard once in the news.
  • Avengers: Infinity War: After Civil War, Lorelay wanted to get off the grid, seeing that she was wanted, and stayed in Queens for a little bit. So, she experienced the giant spaceship that was floating away. She encounters Iron Man on the ship, and was willing to put their differences aside to save the world, but Tony was very skeptical about her presence.
    • Note: Not sure whether to kill her off or not. I need to see the second Infinity War movie to know for sure.

Weaknesses:

  • Lorelay is not fully aware of her capabilities. While she could do so many amazing things with the power she acquired, she is not sure of all of her new abilities. These unknown abilities include turning into water, transporting through water, and creating water out of the air she breaths. She can sort of do the last one, but not enough to do any damage.
  • Lorelay had major trust issues and, sadly, autophobia (the fear of abandonment). Not only did she watch her father die and almost lose the love of her life, but her mother abandoned her. When she allows someone in, she needs to be 100% sure she can protect them or they can protect themselves.
  • Lorelay does not have the strongest physical endurance. Because of this, she needs to able to avoid attacks and take down her enemy as soon as possible and however possible.
  • Instead of thinking of her selkie side as an advantage, she thinks of it as a burden. She hated being related to a thing that has the guts to leave without a word. She is not comfortable in her skin, and the selkiepaws (her webbed hands and feet) did not help. She is constantly hiding them. Her feet are easily, because all she needs to do is wear close-toes shoes, but she must where specially made gloves to hide her hands.
  • Lorelay tends to overthink. She will delve over unnecessary details. This will help her in the hero business, but very rarely. It can change her judgment
  • Along with the overthinking, she can’t take failure. The thought of it alone gets her in a panic. She is constantly putting burdens on herself, and it’s not healthy.

    Notes:
  • Lorelay is half Selkie. A selkie is a creature of Celtic mythology. Selkies are men or women who can be human, but they wear their sealskins to become seals and go into the ocean.
  • Lorelay is constantly cold, but she loves it. It makes her feel like she’s in the water, which is a safespace for her.
  • Lorelay is a workout addict.
  • Lorelay is married to Derek, but refuses to change her last name.
  • Lorelay is easily bored and does not have a good attention span.
  • Lorelay is extremely prone to headaches. To battle that, her swimming goggles are tinted black. Added to that, Derek, who works in Stark Industries, upgraded them, making the tech in the goggles were like a mini Ironman helmet.
  • Lorelay is more strategy oriented, especially since water is not the best weapon.
  • Lorelay loves green tea and everything green tea flavoured.

Notable Relations:

  • Natasha Romanoff: Natasha was the first agent Lorelay met when starting at S.H.I.E.L.D. Natasha is the only one of the agents/Avengers she’s met and fully trusted. The only time she questioned her decision was when Natasha did not choose Cap’s side during Civil War.
  • Clint Barton: Clint was almost an immediate since he and Natasha were great friends.
  • Bruce Banner: Bruce was very nice to be around. Since he must stay calm to avoid hulking out, Lorelay spends time in his quieter vicinity while he works.
  • Wanda Maximoff: With Wanda, Lorelay’s normal relationship with people switched. All of a sudden, Lorelay was the teacher, Lorelay was the role model.
  • Steven (Steve) Rogers: (TBA)
  • Anthony (Tony) Stark: (TBA)

Wow.

WOW!

I have been working on this character for months. I believe it started in December, and I have dragged my best friends in it with me. A lot of work and heartbreak was put into this character, and I am so happy with the result.

I want to say thank you to for giving me a ton of advice and really giving me a final push for this character. I actually finished watching Jessica Jones in less than twenty-four hours for this, but it was worth it. I got plot and design inspiration.

Also, I think in the midst of this, I have developed my art style! So, that's exciting. A lot of what I did here was actually inspired a lot by

To add to that, I learned a lot about anatomy from this project.
