Description Because 'phoenix' is a bit of a lame title... Anyway, happy belated birthday TheStarlightPrincess ! I hope you'll like it!

I usually don't draw phoenixes as something swan-like. Flamey birds of prey all the way! This one matches TheStarlightPrincess ' phoenixes more though - I hope.Β

In case someone wonders how the flame curls have been made: that's not drawing them, but erasing. I 'coloured' that area with graphite pencil and a pencil stump and then used my eraser to get the light bits. There must be ways to draw something like this the ordinary way, but I like to use my eraser for more than just fixing mistakes.

Paper: roughly A5, Moleskine art book.

Man! Gotta love that flame effect technique
Fun fact : When I see the name "hot wings", my mind goes all the way to "fried chicken", dunno why XD

Thanks! Well, fried chicken wings are called hot wings, right? as long as they are spicy

Spicy fried chickens are nice, the only downside is that I can't handle much spice, my stomach is't built for it XD

I love seeing the erasing technique you used for the flames, it looks very effective! I also love the flowyness of the wings and feathers of this phoenix, so much curl <3

Curls are my life XD not that the bird is able to fly with such feathers, but who cares!

Yay, for the creative title! Oh, whoa! I love it, the pose is gorgeous! It's great how the wings and tail fade into the wisps of fire and smoke! You truly made justice for the phoenix's talons and plumage! It's so fluffy, aaaaah! <3 Funny though, my creative mind sees yet another "hidden" creature in this; it comes from the placement and pose of the wings and the light part of the wisps: reminds me of a horned creature. I usually get the light parts with kneaded eraser. It's much easier, you kind of "add" in the highlights. Though sometimes I try to leave blank places, but then end up strengthening them with the eraser.

Hehe, I've always imagined phoenixes as swan-like creature. If I'm honest the eagle-like style is more uncommon to me, funny. Maybe it's that I was really fascinated by swans when I was a little, well, Whooper swans: our national bird. ^^

Thank you ever so much!

I'm so glad you like it! can't see the horned creature though, but everyone sees something else in flames I guess Β
I use my kneaded eraser if I want to 'fade' a drawing, so making it lighter without removing all graphite or create harsh edges between the erased and non-erased parts. for this pic, I mainly used an eraser in the shape of a pencil for the flames, so that I can erase details. You can sharpen such a an eraser into a point, you see.

Oh, that's because the swan-like version is more common I don't like swans at all though...Β

Yes, fading is another good technique, I use that too. Hehe, I used my sharpener but it's often dirty of all the remnants of the pencils. XD And well sometimes when there's awfully many layers of 6B to 9B it can get a bit difficult to make it white again without accidentally rubbing away something else. Haven't tried graphite pens though, I've thought of that but then I discovered they weren't waterproof,Β  it's not so great idea to work with them on a bed... I've only tried charcoal pencils. Is there a big difference between the graphic, pencils and the charcoal pencils?

I used to like them more, though I still prefer Whooper swans. Funny, the English term is much closer to their sound. We call them: laulujoutsenet = Songswans. lol Eagles, hawks and crow birds are another interest of mine and have always been, and some owls.

I never use charcoal, I find that a pain to work with because it tendsΒ to smudge more. Graphite gives more detail too, I think, also because it works great on smooth paper. Ith shines though, but that's the only downside. And I've never encountered graphite that isn't waterproof (actually, my guts tell me charcoal should dilute first). My work requires to do fieldwork once in a while, and we have to write down stuff in notebooks. I have been told during studies to always use a pencil because rain will dissolve ink. and no, we didn't use charcoal pencils They were cheap graphite things. I've made paintings with acrylics and lots of water that had a graphite sketch, which the graphite survived. Then again, the one time I used a thick layer of graphite for this, not a simple sketch, I used a fixator spray first.

I never use charcoal either, it's just too dark and hard media to me. Great to know that! ^Well, I've mainly used the charcoal pens as a sort of first layer to which I then add pencil. It works as a kind of base to start with for me which I can then start adding details to. Aha, that's true rain and ink just can't get along... We here always do notes with pencils, I can't understand how people manage/must do test with ball point pen, it's just not a thing here. Prepare to get scolded at if you lack a pencil in a test, the teacher will get furious... Oh, I tend to use fixative just when I'm done with the work, because who knows if I spot a mistake or two and wish to change things. ^^

I always make such a mess of the paper when things get super dark...
and yes, that! I scold students when they make a graph with ballpoint pen... idiots... not because the graph gets wet, but because they can't correct their own work this way.
