Description Drew this during my trip to California in about 15 minutes (a record, huzzah!). We just visited those huuuuuge redwood trees near the coast. Man, that left such an impact.
Do you sometimes have the feeling you are your own imaginary characters? I don't have that much with Rain because he is such a  weirdo, but I felt I was walking in his shoes there - not that he has shoes, but still.

This work is part of a story I'm working on, called 'a State of Equilibrium. Find more about it here:

Rain looks to be at home near those redwoods! I know I've never seen the giants of redwood, but even standing beside a tree that's so thick your arms cannot reach around it if you don't add like two to three other people, and then glancing all the way at the top helps to realise how small you are. Unfortunately there are not many of those sized trees in Finland, but I like that kind of feeling, because it makes things look more right, as if to remind the people living in cities in man-made structures how they truly aren't in charge of this world even if they so think. ^^ Anyhow, it's a lovely nature scene, I can almost smell the forest, must've been an awesome trip! The highlight is very nicely done as well.

I'm going to California in a week and I'm hoping to go visit the redwood forest while I'm there! It is a 6 hour drive from where I'm staying, though... If I do get to go I'll definitely be imaging Rain wandering around in the woods, haha

And you don't notify me about this one? Rain is the only kind of rain I like. I love it!

Magic atmosphere in the drawing and good size proportions. In 15 Minutes, Wow, and then such a picture, really cool work

Double takes so hard neck nearly snaps When I've told people I want to 'master' graphite before moving onto color, and my definition of 'mastering' is to be able to draw a good fantasy scene, this is what I'm referring to. And you only did this in 15 minutes? It took me like half an hour just to do the linework on my newest piece. I love how the back parts are lighter than the front, that's good perspective. I can also make out a lot of detail in the character and the plants. Overall excellent work on this, I hope to be a fraction of this good someday in my own art.

thank you so much! what really helps for me is to have a very clear picture in my mind of what I want to draw - which sounds super easy, but that picture diffuses when I look at something else, say an empty page in a sketchbook. I've been taking photos of big trees all day when I made that sketch, so that picture was quite stuck this time XD one of the reasons I could draw it so quickly. The other reason is that I used a lot of H and HB pencils here, nothing dark, because that takes longer to draw. I don't really think about linework... It's just, this is a dark area, this a light one, and I'll figure out what it exactly is supposed to be later.

Understandable, that transition from the mind's eye to the page is one of the hardest things about art. Interesting about linework, my lines overall have been crummy so I make up for it with shading to convey form but other artists tell me I should start doing more sketching and stuff since it's an essential skill. I should know how to do better linework if I want to draw stuff like buildings in the future.

It certainly is an essential skill, but it can also be distracting. You need it to get proportions and such right, and that's especially important if your skills are a little green. once those lines are there, though, it's hard to ignore them, and get back to that mind's eye picture. That's fine for some styles that rely on lineart, but I want to go for a more realistic look, and the real world isn't made out of lines. we see things because we see differences in colour and brightness, so I tend to think in 'shapes' of colour and brightness instead of outlines, if that makes any sense. I often try to get those rough colours there asap, so my sketches are just stick figures or simply not there XD I sometimes do linework after that rough colour/shading step to see if proportions make any sense. Obviously, this approach doesn't work for everything, it involves erasing things. Photoshop is great, pencilwork is doable, but ink is just one big no...
Don't think my way is the way to do it, though. it just works for me - and not even all the time, haha! There are people who do detailed lines first before going to a realistic drawing. Though the examples of that I've seen always have a photo as reference, so you don't need that mind's eye anymore :/

Is the grey scale this light in real or has your scan eaten your pencil again?

queenofeagles In reply to K-naille [2019-05-03 18:35:44 +0000 UTC]

It's actually a little lighter in real life. drawing is a lot faster if I don't have to create dark shades.

Ah, I understand. I only use H pencils instead of HB, they are dryer and the lines lighter.
Still, you did a great job at capturing this forest atmosphere

ah, thanks!

And it seems scans' light doesn't reflects as much than with HB or B pencils...

Nice sketch.  This only took fifteen minutes?  A drawing like this would take days for me to complete.

Thanks! One of the reasons I finished it quickly is because the shadows are actually quite light (they got darkened digitally). making dark colours takes me a lot of time.

Oh, I didn't know that.  Looks great though.  I've been to the Redwoods myself a few times since I used to live in California. Beautiful place and it's no wonder everyone raves about the trees!
