Description Here’s a blast from the past….I was bored one night looking through my old images and found fourteen unprocessed exposures of M42. I think I decided I was maybe going to do something with them at a later date as the focus was off a tad. Taken sometime during the 07/08 winter with the C9 and a f6.3 reducer, so the field of view isn’t ideal, fitting only three quarters of the nebula in, but it’s still cool to see it up close.

For this I combined the composite of fourteen exposures and a single shorter exposure for the bright core. I then combined them as layers and erased through the core area to reveal the lesser exposed version.

Image Details:
Celestron 9.25” SCT @F.6.30
Canon 350D
14 x 60-70 second exposures @ ISO 400
Deepsky Stacker and Photoshop

how much did this setup cost? I currently tinker with an old skool celestron and wanted to take it to the next level. Great image!

Thanks The mount was £750, the OTA was £750 also. the camera was aound £500. When I stop and take note of how much it adds up to I think wow, that's a lot, but it's been bought over the years. I sell old stuff to buy new gear. Give me a shout if you need any more advice Cheers

Nice Simon! The big SCT's produce a really nice field of view for close ups of these extended nebulae... I found with my SCT that maintaining good focus was very difficult, as it would drift between exposures.. Yours actually looks rather sharp considering you say the focus was off a little.

Well done.

Alex.

Thanks a lot Alex! I haven't used the SCT for a long time. Thinking of selling both scope to get a better refractor...

Cheers!

You should submit some of these to National Geographic.

It's beautiful beyond words.

That's very kind words, thank you very much. Well yeah, the orion nebula makes for a very attractive image, but there are people who have better equipment and take much better images than me.

PS.. Your website and artwork are really good!!!

Ooooooo. (I always tend to say the same thing when I look at your pics, ja?) But really, that's the first thing that comes to mind. Space is amazing. The Orion Nebula is so far away yet it is visible to the naked eye...that's quite a lot of energy it is producing.

Nice shot regardless of being slightly out of focus. Interesting color balance in the nebulosity and good balance in the Trapazium's brightness (tough to not burn it out sometimes ... especially when all you're exposures are of the same value).

Cheers.

Hello there stranger ... Thanks for the wow! The orion nebula certainly does have a certain wow factor, mainly because of its brightness. These days I prefer capturing the more distant fainter galaxies though, more of a challenge .. It's been a long time, hey? How are you?

It really has been a long time. It's been a really hard term. Thanks for the card by the way for v.day! I was really touched but I couldn't really acknowledge it at the time because of my then-boyfriend. He cheated on me. Grr. My msn is kerrylynthomas@live.co.uk. xxx
