Description
Love pirates and love sci fi. I also love different genres that combine to create their own space, so this was a pleasure to work on. I liked mixing futuristic tech with an old school aesthetic. And those are plasma sabers, not to be confused with light sabers.(don't want the Disney lawyers to show up at my door.lol)
This piece was also a good excuse to try out a new workflow I have been working on to speed up the painting process, as well as some new techniques I've been experimenting with.
My idea was to have a crew made up different aliens collected from the different planets they have visited, with a captain they would follow anywhere.
Since the crew was made up of different aliens I wanted a crest that would be somewhat universal. I figured no matter what planet they are from, the sun and stars would probably be represented visually in a similar way. They would probably also be a universal means of navigation. So I placed a star within a sun shaped medallion. I also included an infinity symbol to the infinite universe, as well as the infinite possibilities, adventures, and freedom it contains.
Done with Sketchbook Pro, and Corel Painter.

Are those flintlock blasters? o.O
Regardless, I like it.

Yeah, though I didn't really give much thought into the mechanics on how they worked. I just though it would make an interesting visual mixing the antique look of a flintlock with an energy based weapon. Same goes for the blades.

It's a neat touch. I mean, lightsabers aside, the most intriguing SW sidearm is probably Boba Fett's "sawed-off" blaster rifle. Still a mystery after 39 years.

The overall composition came before I had any ideas. I knew I wanted a view looking up at the captain with the railing at an angle. Everything else worked from that starting point.
