oooh i love when his head is more long and crocodilian than the horn-covered short-snout critter. THIS is how I pictured Smaug--there's a reason he's called a wyrm after all, and that sinuous neck, and the tiniest little dip in it just behind his head... gah, that just MADE it for me. Very serpentine. Very lovely.

Can't get any better; this is indeed Smaug as Tolkien envisioned it. It deserves that honor.

I did this one after the Lord of the Rings movies came out, but still a few years before the Hobbit movies. It was all the way back in spring 2009 that I actually painted it. I tried to base the look of him mostly on Tolkien's illustrations and descriptions from the book.

That is really good. Did you see the hobbit movies. I thought that they were great even if they did not follow the book entirely. It was still a good movie to enjoy. Have you read all of the lors of the rings/hobbit books?

Yeah, I've seen all the movies and read all the books. I liked the Hobbit movies, but nowhere near as much as I liked the Lord of the Rings movies.

That is really cool. So have you ever read the Percy Jackson books or the Kane chronicles or the heroes of Olympus. They are all by the same author Rick Riordon. You should check it out some time if you haven't. But read the books before the movie. They are so much better. π

So, the villain that's been building up all through the previous two movies gets taken out in the first 10 minutes of the third one?
It's like if Emperor Palpatine killed Darth Vader in the opening scene of "Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi"...

this is amazing! But didnt smaugs wings connect with his fore-arms? so he only had 4 limbs.....

Batterymaster In reply to AutumnZodiac [2017-07-17 14:21:45 +0000 UTC]
Depends on which incarnation. The book interpretation has six limbs (four legs and two wings), while the film interpretation has only four limbs (two legs and two wings).

Not trying to be nasty or anything but what youve done here is not smaug. It is still a wonderful bad-ass drawing but smaug is a fire drake and his only form of walking is with his back legs he doesnt have any front ones. Its like his front arms built into his wings so he walks on the hands on the joimt of his wings. I watch look up and research the hobbit so i know alot about it and i love the hobbit. Still not trying to be nasty but i dont really like it when people put something that isnt smaug on dA and say it is. It kinda like dissing the character to me. But still its awsome

You're thinking of the movie version of Smaug. My illustration and the vast majority of artists interpretations are based on the original artwork that tolkien made himself clearly drawing four legs.
atolkienistperspective.wordpreβ¦
"Tolkien clearly states that Smaug was one of the last great dragons to come out of the North.
The man himself even provided his own illustrations for this creature, clearly outlining the four-legs feature."
Do a google search and you'll find at least a couple of Tolkien's original drawings of Smaug with four legs.
The two legged version of Smaug from the movie is pretty cool, but I literally painted my illustration a few years before it even existed.

no, not Smaug, I will complain to all Smaug "artists" he is lion faced, furry cheeks and fur down his spin, missing a scale on his chest, VERY red, cat eared and has an under bite, you got his long neck right though.

If you're getting your knickers in such a twist over how a character is interpreted through art, then why not draw Smaug in the Rankin Bass style yourself?
People do draw Smaug in said- style, so go and enjoy it instead of moaning.

You're thinking of the cartoon version of Smaug. My painting is based more heavily on the illustrations that Tolkien did himself.

i saw this picture as an entry on that "treasures of middle earth" design contest last fall and fell in love. this is a Great Smaug, I love how long he is, and how, despite it being a fully fleshed out painting, he looks so much like that little pen and ink drawing tolkien did of him. really well done, classic dragon
