Zol was able to discuss with Rune at length getting a Sheikah mask, and being allowed to claim Rune's clan and customs as their own while wearing it.
Their desire was to have a form that would make it easier to interact with the population of Clock Town, while still being somewhat unapproachable. Their king agreed this was a sound idea - strolling into Clock Town as a Sheikah is less likely to get you attacked by the town guards as doing the same thing as a Stalfos. The Sheikah, while mysterious, were much more trustworthy than a monster.

But Zol also had other motives beside this decision. It was a very long time ago, and the memories are dull and faded, but Zol recalls faintly what their face looked like before the curse. The Sheikah, they believe, would be the most closely related race to native Ikanians pre-curse. Zol had hoped, small and secretly, that perhaps they could see their true face again.
But it seems that trying to remove the face mask their Sheikah form wears simply removes the Sheikah mask itself.

These flights of fancy are useless anyway, and don't aid their ultimate goal. Having a flesh and blood face is for the sake of the people of Termina, and not for themself.
