I kinda got out of punk because of this, all these kids at my school dying their hair neon colors and ripping their jeans. I just couldn't really take it anymore. It makes me kind of sad when I see them just come and go, changing styles and jumping on trends with each new week.
(Wonderful poem by the way.)

my small group of close friends and i are the only group of people with real punk in the whole damned school
the others may listen to the music, but they let it go through one ear and out the other, focusing on how it sounds and the audio quality, rather than the raw energy and emotion behind lyrics
punk was 'cool' for a while, and others naturally conformed to whatever was popular
they used to shun us, and the next day they were our best friends, chatting about how awesome various bands were
although, they never really appreciated the music, they never ACTUALLY grasped the meaning of punk, they simply copied the celebrities
of course, it slowly died out and they found themselves immersed in another fad that they would slowly discard and laugh at in time
they returned to looking down their noses at us and we were those 'weird, punky try-hard' kids that listened to 'shitty' bands that they themselves had loved and fawned over weeks before
by that time 'punk' had lost all meaning, it had been tortured and bullied, then loved and displayed on tall pedestals, only to plummet back to earth
none of them ever actually knew what it was
i've been called 'try-hard' and 'fake' because i was different
a girl i thought was my friend asked me why i couldnt just be normal, as she told me that she didnt want to hang out anymore because i 'ruined her image'
although, what pissed me off the most was that i asked her what normal was and she pretty much couldnt find an answer
eventually, she yelled 'its not stupid punk!'
i asked her if she even knew what punk was, and her reply was 'its that music with loud electric guitars, incoherent screaming guys and fans nodding their heads to the rhythm of the music. its those guys that go get a mohawk cut, and buy a pair of plaid pants and a studded belt with chains. that ugly dress style and kids that think they're so cool because they have a lip piercing'
she had no fucking idea
none of them did, or do for that matter
punk used to be something raw and beautiful before all that shit went down
now the heart and soul left in punk is but a mere shadow of what it once was, and is now seen as 'gay' by the majority of society
what a wonderful world we live in, filled with respectful, accepting people who think their own thoughts and arent threatened by peers into conforming to the latest trend
i agree with every word you have written in that poem
seriously, i love you
at least there are still people like you giving punk a good name
shit, this is a long comment, i dont usually write long ones but this is one of those subjects thats really hits a nerve

Loads of solidarity to you, for real. I appreciate your attitude and comprehension of where I'm coming from. Its frustrating and kind of depressing to watch such a beautiful "anti label", freedom of individuality concept get smeared in your face like that, sounds like your peers have a while down the road to get yet before finding themselves. Punk was born to be wild and undefinable and created to destroy and contradict itself, not caged up labeled and sold. Funny how that turned out, right? And thank you for your long comment. : )

whoa
i didnt even know i COULD write comments that long
good thing DA doesnt have a word limit
its sad what used to be such a beautiful awe-inspiring thing has become a common adjective and label
i completely agree with you, and no problem, punk is one of those subjects that just makes me start ranting
and if anyone disses it, or slips up and insults it, i literally end them
one girl said punk was shit and just a stupid label for kids that are trying to be 'rebellious' and 'cool'
so, i made her best friend hate her, her boyfriend leave her and she was cast off as a loner
but, she apologised and now we're friends, shes actually a really nice person but she hung around with some posers who claimed to be punk and her view of the whole 'punk' thing was so warped and stupid
ugh, there needs to be a synonym for punk, i just cant think of anything else to say and IT ANNOYS ME SO MUCH

well, having your own opinion and doing what you want is basically what punk is
or at least, thats what i believe
seriously, just screw it
i am what i am, i do what i do and i dont give a shit what anyone else thinks
call it punk, call it rebellion, call it whatever the fuck you want to
just dont expect me to care

It's sad that that's what people think of "punk" That it's just brands, and the cloths. They do it because it's "Cool" to be punk. I bet none of them really know what it is. What it stood for. Now sure I was born in '97 but even I know what punk was about other wise I wouldn't be "Punk". Though sure I don't do anarchy, or sport a Mohawk, I still am classified as "punk" by the preps at my school for the music I listen too, the style I wear, and for my beliefs. People seriously need to be taught some things.

Very true, I mean if the whole world did this, there wouldn't be wars based on disagreements of things like the way the various religions interpret their god(s). Heck suicide based on bulling would go down tremendously, so would a lot of things. Though sadly I doubt this will happen in our lifetime.

punk is not an out-of-date word on an out-of-date shirt.
punk is not pre-k pants or a brand-new jacket.
punk is not corporate bands or bullshit discriminatory verse.
punk is not clean little patches from a mall packet.
(or posing in your mom's driveway to pretend you can hack it.)
because the truth? punk's both alive and obscene.
how pretentious of you, to say you know what it means.

I didn't nor would I ever claim to define "punk", because if anything can be said about if for sure is that it's made to contradict itself and defy confinement in a definition. I agree with all of your above statement. What my poem is about is how the popular consciousness and media have skewed "punk" into a cartoonish steriotype easily picked up by the impressionable and marketable, without them ever understanding where it came from or what it means via its history. Would you agree to that?

I'd just like to say that this is an awesome piece. I think I'm fave-ing it more for the poem than the photo. Well, and those beautiful shoes. Did you write it or is it lyrics to some awesome song I've never heard?

Ohman I couldn't agree with this more! D:
I love the REAL meaning of punk. Now that we know what it isn't, we gotta find what it is though..
I love you for doing this <3 I'm certainly not the definition of punk but I appreciate it more than any "style" out there and I'm so glad other people see it for what it really is ♥♥
