Another fanart. I've been wanting to draw this for a long time so I finally decided to do it.This is just my own opinion, but I really hate the new Spongebob episodes they're making now. They're not funny, and the characters aren't the same anymore. Even Spongebob is annoyingly unfunny now. I wish they would stop making new episodes and just call it a day.
EDIT: I switched the names around because a lot of people have been telling me that the names should be switched and I kinda see their point, so I switched them. This is where I'm a little confused about whether or not it makes sense now, so feedback would be most welcome! It still gets the message across regardless so it's not really a huge problem.
EDIT AGAIN: I decided to take out the captions completely and leave the idea of which one is the new or old Spongebob up for interpretation. I think that works much better since the captions have made it a bit confusing ^-^

So, old SpongeBob is dry and boring while new SpongeBob is colorful and exciting? Granted, I do get what the fuss is about, though Season 9 is better than 6-8. Just providing new perspective.

It was supposed to be that the new Spongebob is so overly happy and stiff, and the old Spongebob is just sick of what he's become lol I might even consider removing the captions so that people can interpret it for themselves, since there's a lot of confusion.

I think removing the captions would be a good idea. The concept of the art is clever, and it leaves a lot of stuff open for interpretation.

I have loved spongebob my whole life and still love it to this day. Over the course of 16 years not much has changed in the show and I think the new writers do a great job so why do a lot of the older fans hate it the only notable differences between "Old Spongebob" and "New Spongebob" are ( A Spongebob's voice is higher pitched, (B Mr. Krabs and Squidward are getting more POV episodes, (C Sandy is into Karate less and in most of the episodes she is in she dose science or builds an invention, (D Squidward is a total Jerk to Spongebob even when he isn't trying to bother him and even when SB tries to be kind to him E) the art work improved , and don't say Mr. Krabs got cheaper in the newer seasons because he didn't watch ; "Imitation Krabs", "Squid on Strike, the Krusty Krab training Video," Sailor Mouth", "Krabby Land" and,"Born Again Krabs" and you'll believe me and other than that none of the characters act any different other than that so whats with all the hate. also alot of you say the show isn't as good because the creator left but the creator actually loves the new episodes here is proof Link:voices.washingtonpost.com/comi…

SpongeBob is more square in the newer episodes. Maybe their designs should be flipped but with brighter colors on the squarer one.

See, I am not going to tell you that you should not like the new one. If you do so, then that is perfectly fine. However, I and many others believe that the show has dropped significantly in quality after the first movie, although it has recently become better again. "We" believe that this decline was mainly caused by the development of the characters, including Spongebob himself. It seems to "us" that he and his show have lost their special charm.

Why would the old spongebob by considered dull and unamused? I know he wouldn't be pleased with himself now.
The original spongebob had spunk and positivity. He was also smarter than and not as annoying as the new one.

I also miss the old SpongeBob. sure, he almost always had a positive attitude, but even he knew when everything wasn't fun and games anymore. one great example is when Squidward got himself fired and so SpongeBob took him in. but after months of Squidward taking advantage of SpongeBob's generosity, SpongeBob has had enough and wants Squidward out.
The new SpongeBob wouldn't send Squidward subliminal messages that its time to get a job and move out of his house. he would just sit at Squidward's beside and stare at him for days with his new creepy smile until Squidward felt uncomfortable enough to move out by himself or do something violent to Squidward out of random stupidity. remember House Fancy when SpongeBob ripped off Squidward's toe nail and then smashed his foot with furniture? that wouldn't be funny even if it was put into an adult cartoon like Simpsons or Family Guy.
Sometimes I want to get a job at Nickelodeon to show them how to write an episode of SpongeBob. I may not write comedy but I'm still positive I can do better than them.

That is very true. Even though Spongebob used to be very optimistic, he was also very "real". The example you used was perfect. Spongebob reacted as anyone would if they were in that situation. He may be more positive than most people, but he is still very "human". From the new episodes I've seen though, that realism seems to be gone, and Spongebob just comes off as over-the-top and creepy. From the examples you've given, his behavior is more disturbing than funny and optimistic. The new episodes are also shockingly gross, not amusing at all. The people creating these episodes seem to be lazily trying to appeal to the kids by just throwing stuff in there, but they're failing miserably. In my opinion, they seem to be more focused on profit and not actually producing good episodes. They are just crushing everyone's childhood.

The only character who hasn't changed is Squidward. even though he's still as selfish and self absorbed as ever, there are times you feel bad for him in these newer episodes. here's this video I found about it.

Mr. Krabs always used to be greedy in the old episodes but even he had his limits. now adays, he's seen as a regular criminal because he cant go one episode without being arrested at the end. not just because he dumbs illegally grease on private property or pays his employees with Monopoly money but there have been a handful of episodes where he actually steals and pickpockets from his own customers and even once tried to drive someone to suicide.

Sandy used to be a great support character who wanted to introduce the other characters to her world only for everyone to misunderstand. now adays, she's paranoid of the people around her because she think's they're spying on her and plotting her downfall. like in the episode Welk Attack when giant snails invade the town. SpongeBob and Patrick run to Sandy's house for help, but Sandy think's they're Welks in disguise. she hasn't seen the Welks shape shift into someone else, and she doesn't have proof they're smart enough or capable of doing that, but that doesn't stop her from locking herself inside her house thinking everyone is after her. if she's not being paranoid about the the air she breathes, she ether wont stop talking about Texas or doing illegal experiments on people.
