Description This is one I had been planning to do for quite a while. I still love Zootopia, but this along with the annoying preachiness keeps it from being one of my all time favorites.

I was actually planning on doing Prince Hans first because I thin he's a lot worse, but already covered him pretty damn well. So this seemed like the next obvious step. I would say spoilers, but come on. It's your fault for not seeing the movies yet

Voice Actors

Assistant Mayor Bellwether- Jenny SlateΒ

King Candy- Alan Tudyk

Don’t get me wrong I knew he was the bad guy from the start because he felt a bit off and how he treated vanellope but the twist that he was turbo all this time I did not expect it was almost very similar to when judge doom from who framed Roger rabbit was revealed to be a toon all the time

I guess I found more hints than you did.

Agree with you on Bellwether. I was really enjoying her until the twist happened, and I felt pretty insulted by it. If she had more "evil" time or at least more time to explain her motivation, that probably would have been better.

The thing I most disliked about Bellwether was her predictability.
Maybe it's just because of all the movies I've seen and how overused the Twist Villain is becoming, but right in my first viewing, I was able to quickly suspect Bellwether would turn out to be the slime behind everything, both from the way she was portrayed seeming to fit into the Twist trend and from the fact that she was clearly the one who would most stand to benefit from predators going savage and people's fears of them intensifyng.
King Candy, in contrast, is an amazing villain for a number of reasons. First up, he's a different sort of Twist Villain; While, as you said, you get the sense pretty much immediately that he's an antagonist (i.e. His insistence that Vanellope not be allowed to race, threatening to have Ralph thrown in the Fungeon, etc.), the twist with him ended up being not that he'd be a bad guy, but WHAT KIND of bad guy he would be. See, for most of the movie, he came across as one of Disney's "Funny" villains (i.e. Captain Hook, or Prince John from 'Robin Hood'), but by the end, it's clear that he is dead serious as a villain (i.e. Gothel, Ursula, or even Frollo). The climax did a brilliant job of making him go from funny to serious/ intense (Learning his true identity) to full- on nightmare fuel (His final form).
btw, I met his voice actor Alan Tudyk (A marvelously talented actor who I'd been a fan of for years before 'Wreck it Ralph' premiered) at a convention a few years back, and am pleased to say he was an extremely nice guy with a great sense of humor, as I knew he would be. As we talked, I mentioned that King Candy was one of the best Disney villains ever, and he did a little of his King Candy voice for me!

Those are some great points. King Candy is a very underrated villain in my opinion.

You met Alan Tudyk? Freaking awesome!

While i love Bellwether, i agree that she could be a better twist villain. I think King Candy is really cool.

Couldn’t have agreed more, one films manages to cleverly make a twist villain so amazingly built up, while the other falls completely flat on their face.

Nice.Β
Probably the best example of a twist villain I've seen is from the movie "Dog Soldiers", which came out long before the whole twist villain trend. I won't give away who it is, but as you stated there were subtle hints, and when put together it made senseΒ

I made a character comparison myself with Bellwether comparing her to another if you haven't seen it yet here.Β Character Comparisons: Power Hungry Dictators

I agree, I mean as much as I love Bellwether, there were so many plot holes and unanswered questions that happened regarding her so-called diabolical plans. She's so underdeveloped and has so little screen time that it makes the twist seem forced, even with the "wolf in sheep's clothing" just to make a point, but doing so has left her an underrated villain who can't reach the same level as earlier Disney villains like Scar, Frollo, or Syndrome. I hate how they make it seem like she's evil or racist for the sake of it because the plot demands it, but it shouldn't have to suit her, and should have been someone else. I also hate it when someone says it's unneseccary to add in a backstory or bigger reasoning behind her motivation which is bogus, because giving her more than one reason for her actions is what makes a lot of villains epic, sympathetic, and understanding. For all we know, Bellwether might have once been a victim of prejudice, bullying, and abuse herself worse than Nick and Judy and Lionheart was the last straw.

But in my opinion, if any other character voiced by Jenny Slate should have been a villain, it would be Valerie Da Vinci (Despicable Me 3).

Thanks for the perspective! I certainly wish that they could've done her more justice too.

Disneycow82 In reply to RaccoonBroVA [2018-03-10 04:10:38 +0000 UTC]

That's why King Candy is the most diabolical of all the Disney twist villains.

They should have done more for Bellwether, instead of passing her off as just "evil and racist because the plot twist demands it" but adding nothing more which makes it unbelievable.

Disneycow82 In reply to RaccoonBroVA [2018-03-10 06:06:05 +0000 UTC]

Because even if she turned out to be the twist villain, something about Lionheart's mistreatment and her imprisonment made me feel sympathy for her, like she may not be entirely what the movie wants us to think. But also because I wished they made her an ally instead of a villain, like Nick or Judy suspecting she is in on it at first until they realize the culprit is someone else and she was being used as a puppet. That I would have loved. I just couldn't bring myself to hate her like others do just for being a twist villain.Β

My issue with Bellwether is a pacing one. She has everything needed for a good villain, but she's introduced so laye in the story that she has no time to do much besides give a vague speech and be defeated. I frankly Frozen handled this better but Ralph did it better than both so yeah, agreed.
